Jeff Bridges, the Academy Award winning actor known for his roles in The Big Lebowski, King Kong, and other classic Hollywood films, will be making his return as computer programmer Kevin Flynn in Tron: Ares, a third installment of the sci-fi adventure film franchise that is currently in production at Disney, sources have confirmed. Bridges, 74, first shared the news with Film Comment last week, mentioning in a podcast about how he’s eager to work with Jared Leto, who stars as the titular Program “Ares” in the upcoming film.

Bridges said:

  • “I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the Tron story.”
  • “Jared Leto is the star of this third one.”
  • “I’m really anxious to work with him; I’ve admired his work.”

Tron: Ares cast now includes:

  • Jared Leto
  • Jeff Bridges
  • Gillilan Anderson
  • Evan Peters
  • Cameron Monaghan

Recent comments from Monaghan, suggesting the VFX will be on another level:

  • “I think this one, in a very similar way, is going to really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective.”
  • “I would sometimes even come in on days I wasn’t working, because that set was really amazing.”
  • “A lot of the practical sets were pretty phenomenal, and I would love to go look at those as well.”

A look at what Ares’ improved de-aging might look like, assuming it has any:

A description for the film:

…Tron: Ares follows Leto’s highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.
