The Elder Scrolls VI, a new installment in the series of fantasy action RPGs from Bethesda Game Studios that, while having received an official announcement trailer six years ago, on June 10, 2018, remains largely a mystery, will fail to impress whenever it eventually releases, according to the latest thoughts from game designer and Bethesda veteran Bruce Nesmith. Nesmith, whose credits include lead designer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and quest designer/writer for Fallout 4, mentioned during a recent interview that player expectations for The Elder Scrolls VI will be “almost impossible to meet,” adding that the marketing department might be disappointed as well.

Nesmith said:

  • “The fans who want to buy Elder Scrolls 6, their expectation is going to be almost impossible to meet.”
  • “And marketing departments just put their heads in their hands and weep at this.”
  • “Because it’s like, ‘Okay, if it isn’t perfect, it doesn’t get a 95-plus on Metacritic, we’re a failure’.”

The full word from Nesmith:

That's sad when you say your game won't contend with what came before it. "We're not good enough and don't have the budget to do what Lyrian studios did so we're just going to throw in the towel and hope we're good enough."

When will game developers ever learn that riding the hype train leads to unachievable high expectations which then lead to player disappointment? It's like No Man's Sky never happened ...

Given how negative everyone is these days I'm sure he is right, especially when it's about sequels to beloved games.

Yea people trashed skyrim when it came out... EACH time it was re released but it's still around. So they can do it just gotta suck it up and understand some criticism is BS.

No Elder Scrolls game ever came close to meeting expectations, Bethesda are, and always have been average at best in regards to game design. Where they have always excelled at is creating a giant (mostly) beautiful landscape/canvas for more talented developers/modders to play with. Without modding I'm not sure if they'd still be around, at least not at their current scale.
