Electronic Arts announced that it is laying off around 300-400 employees (per Bloomberg), which includes many from the studio behind Apex Legends and Titanfall. In turn, Respawn Entertainment has announced that it has had to let go of about 100 of its crew as part of the staff reduction. EA, which has not always had the best responses from the gaming community regarding its decisions, has said that it is helping the laid-off staff to find other opportunities. The bulk of EA’s internal layoffs are said to be mainly from its Experiences and Fan Care teams, with others included from marketing and support, and those laid off are encouraged to apply for other positions within the company.

Per EA (via IGN):

“We are treating our people with care and respect throughout this process, working to minimize impacts by helping affected employees explore new opportunities within the company when possible and providing support during the transition.”

Respawn Entertainment has posted about the layoffs, indicating how it must refocus and adjust its remaining staff, although ironically enough, their home page, at the time of this writing, defaults to a “We’re Hiring! Join the Respawn Team”. Two unannounced games have been cancelled, one of which is rumored to have been a new Titanfall game. EA had already reportedly cancelled what is thought to be a different single-player Titanfall game back in 2023. It seems, at least for now, Titanfall cannot get off the ground, and fans will have to wait until Respawn can regroup before another installment moves forward.

Respawn’s remaining staff are primarily tasked with expanding and supporting Apex Legends, which per Steam’s charts still engages at least 100,000-200.000 players monthly, and its Star Wars Jedi franchise. Another irony with the layoffs is that it has been reported that staff from Apex Legends tied to development, publishing, and QA were let go. Regarding the Star Wars Jedi franchise, the challenges for the third and final game only seem to be increasing now following these layoffs, and its original team leader Stig Amussen having left in 2023.

Wasn't Apex pulling in big dollars at one point? I thought it was still fairly large.

You don't need as many developers when all you're doing is making skins.

Apex fell off hard.

And the next casualty is Codemasters. RIP WRC.

WRC doesn't pull in the money like F1 does.

Didn't know that but I believe you. Still sad to see this happen though.

The issue in my mind with WRC is that it isn't traditionally a head to head race. It's a drivers race vs the course and time. You get the opportunity as a driver to extract every iota of performance from a WRC car while not having to contend with other racers on the track.

While F1 is as much about racer psychology and getting in the other racers heads/keeping them out of yours as it is the amazing machines.

Honestly I think we need another group like Hoonigan to step up into the mind of people. Get some amazing stunts going, get some attention back on WRC racing. Because he and that team were putting together stuff people WANTED to engage with at least in the US. Over seas WRC has always been super popular. (See people getting ran over by WRC cars and effectively cheering about it.)

I've seen a ton of omg moments like that, plus some vintage US footage from the late 1800's through 1930s

What they need to do to bring WRC back to its true glory is to f*cking bring back Group B.

Hell, just bring back Group A and N. The production-based classes were exciting. The WRC and GR1 classes have always been a joke to me.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
