A new twenty-minute video has given some fairly detailed gameplay for Borderlands 4, showing off its new features. The PS5 deep dive video has already racked up over 700,000 views in just 15 hours since its debut, so it would appear there are plenty of fans interested in what is to come. Creative Director Graeme Timmins and Senior Project Producer Anthony Nicholson, along with Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, were proud to show off co-op gameplay while exploring the looter shooter’s new characters, weapons, and overhauled movement system and more.
Deep Dive Highlights:
- The story takes place on the planet Kairos, involves a mad scientist doing experiments on humans, and the game can be played single player or online co-op
- New vault hunters revealed: A siren called Vex and a soldier-class called Rafa. There are two other vault hunters yet to be named, but they are seen in the video. Vault hunters each have three action skills featuring skill trees
- Revamped game lobby
- Eight new weapons and three new weapon manufacturers
- New weapon enhancements and added Ordinance Slots for more powerful weapons
- New loot, including a randomized system for modifying weapons with different parts
- Rev Kits to assist in keeping players alive
- Echo 4 helper droid updates, including a new and improved UI
- Overhauled movement system that continues to improve upon changes made in Borderlands 3
Borderlands 4 is now releasing on September 12
Gearbox announced this week that it was moving the launch date for the next instalment up by two weeks to September 12. While some thought the move was made in fear of competing with another Take-Two IP, namely Grand Theft Auto VI, folks might do well to remember that this actually puts it on the 6-year anniversary since the last Borderlands game was released. Gearbox CEO further emphasized on social media that the move was purely based on confidence in the game and had nothing to do with any other game release. Regardless, for better or worse, Gearbox is likely to have a challenge on its hands given the behemoth launch of the next GTA game, which has caused multiple publishers to shift their release schedules to avoid competing with the next highly anticipated installment that is expected to break many sales records.
Borderlands 4 shipping early is 100% the result of confidence in the game and development trajectory backed by actual tasks and bug find/fix rates. Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date.
