Bungie’s Marathon has had a rough go of it since launch, landing in the middle of what has been a fairly rough stretch for the studio more broadly. The extraction shooter made a real impression technically, but the community response has been mixed, and sentiment around Bungie has been soured considerably by recent news about the studio’s ongoing restructuring. All of which makes the Season 2 “Nightfall” trailer genuinely interesting timing-wise.
The trailer is a marked tonal departure from what Marathon shipped as. Where the base game leaned into a slick, colorful sci-fi aesthetic reminiscent of the original Marathon lore, Nightfall goes darker, atmospheric, and horror-adjacent. The original Marathon series on Mac, for the uninitiated, always had a strong horror undercurrent beneath the action, including unsettling AI characters and some genuinely creepy narrative beats. Season 2 looks like it’s reaching back to that well.
Whether this pivot resonates with the current player base or reads as a course correction born of desperation will probably depend on the execution. Horror-tinged extraction shooters have a lot of untapped potential, and Marathon’s world has the lore to support it if Bungie commits.
The trailer also matters as a signal that Bungie is still actively investing in Marathon’s future, which given everything happening at the studio right now, isn’t nothing.
