After five and a half years in Early Access, Valheim finally has a 1.0 release date. Iron Gate and Coffee Stain Publishing announced at the PC Gaming Show 2026 that Valheim exits Early Access on September 9, 2026, bringing with it the Deep North: the game’s final biome and the content players have been waiting for since launch.
The Deep North is a frozen landscape that deceives on arrival, presenting as quiet snowfields and icy mesas before revealing itself as one of the most hostile environments in the game. Abandoned villages, new enemy types including Gammeltrolls, and underground areas with the Elakingar await players who make it to the far northern fringes of their procedurally generated world. The 1.0 launch also marks the game’s first simultaneous release on new platforms: PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 are joining the existing PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S lineup, with full crossplay between all platforms.
Valheim’s development trajectory has been almost uniquely patient for an Early Access game. It launched February 2, 2021 with a small team, sold over 10 million copies in its first year, and spent the following years steadily delivering on its biome roadmap: the Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands, and now the Deep North. Iron Gate has done this without live service mechanics, without battle passes, and without fracturing the playerbase with DLC paywalls. The base price of the game has never changed. In an era when that approach feels almost quaint, it deserves some acknowledgment.
PC Gamer named it game of the year in 2021, and it has maintained a following precisely because of how it was handled. The Deep North announcement generated excitement rather than the exhausted engagement most live service games produce. People want to come back to finish what they started, which is not something most games can say after five years.
For new players, September 9 is as clean an entry point as the game has ever had. For veterans sitting on unfinished worlds, it is time to update and start planning a push north. Iron Gate promises more detailed content reveals as the release date approaches.
