Warhammer 40,000, the grimdark media franchise spawned by the series of miniature wargames that British manufacturer Games Workshop has been developing since 1987, is officially expanding with new films and television series that will be developed in partnership with Amazon, the Games Workshop Group has announced. The agreement comes exactly two years after Amazon MGM Studios acquired global rights to the game, with Henry Cavill tapped to not only star, but executive produce, a cinematic universe based on the property. Cavill, who had a cameo role in this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, celebrated the news on Instagram today, sharing a photo of the shop where he bought his first Warhammer models.
Under the terms of the agreement, Games Workshop has granted exclusive rights to Amazon in relation to films and television series set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, together with an option for Amazon to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe following the release of any initial Warhammer 40,000 production. Production processes in respect of films and television series may take a number of years. The Company makes no change to its forecast for the 52 week period ending 1 June 2025.
