AMD has revealed its upcoming Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series Zen 5-based high-end processors engineered for compute-intensive tasks. Engineered for AI, professional, and business use, or simply those whose needs far exceed what even a top-end consumer-grade platform can offer, the Threadripper series has maintained its edge since first being introduced in 2017, but is no longer just an HEDT part. The Threadripper Pro series launched in 2020, and PC enthusiasts with a bit more cash to burn saw these high-end processors get a bit more out of reach as AMD shifted its targets to more enterprise-focused sectors. That being said, it’s no longer a surprise that the flagship offering goes for almost the price of a low-priced automobile, but AMD is clearly providing a solution for workstations capable of the most demanding tasks.

“Engineered to adapt to the growing needs of AI with up to 96 “Zen 5” CPU cores, enhanced AVX-512 support, 8-channel DDR5-6400 memory and uncompromising PCIe® 5.0 connectivity for the latest high-end GPUs, this new generation of Threadripper PRO is the world’s fastest workstation processor available today.”

At the top of the stack is the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX with 96 cores/192 threads, a 384MB L3 cache, 350 TDP, and an eye-watering $11,699 price tag. At the bottom of the stack is the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9955WX with 16 cores / 32 threads, 64 MB L3 cache, same TDP, but a more palatable price of $1,649. All of the Threadripper Pro processors have a boost clock of up to 5.4 GHz and 350 W TDP. Power draw remains the same as the previous generation.

AMD has emphasized in its promotional materials how the Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series has been engineered with AI tasks in mind. From a 26% improvement over the previous generation’s PRO 7995WX, the new flagship also shows its dominance over similarly configured Intel systems.

“When running a context-based prompting inference test using DeepSeek R1 32B, we are seeing a 49% better performance of Threadripper PRO 9000 over Intel. This impressively demonstrates how important a powerful CPU is even when AI processing is set to use the GPU.”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
