
The future is so bright, you might want to consider wearing shades when viewing items with Samsung’s new tandem OLED displays. With up to 1,600 nits of brightness, it’s probably a good idea to think about skin protection as well, or at least warn those nearby about potential local solar-flare-like events. Kidding aside, it’s often better to have the option of turning down the brightness on a display rather than being at the opposite end of the spectrum in being unable to turn up further if in a space where background light is overpowering.
Samsung is bringing tandem OLED technology to the mobile sector in the form of laptop displays, the first of which is the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (say this five times fast), a 16″ notebook which launched on July 8. Using two stacks of “organic emissive layers” to produce increased brightness while extending the display’s lifespan because they use the same current as one, Samsung’s tandem OLED display meets VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. Requirements for the new standard are 40% higher than the previous. Samsung says that other notebook manufacturers such as ASUS, Dell, and MSI are all expected to begin offering products featuring the new display and supporting the new standard within the second half of 2026, and more to come in 2027.

Samsung is showcasing its new mobile display solution this week at the Korea Display Exhibition. It will be interesting to see reviews of the new display and how well it performs across multiple tests ranging from gaming, productivity, and media consumption.
