Don’t Expect RDNA 5 Before Computex 2027, and Late 2027 Looks More Likely, Says Kepler_L2

If you’ve been holding off on a graphics card upgrade until AMD’s next generation shows up, the wait just got longer.

Kepler_L2 has a solid track record on AMD’s RDNA and Zen roadmaps. In a reply on the AnandTech forums, the leaker said RDNA 5 will not launch within the next few months. Asked about Computex 2027, which starts the first week of June, Kepler_L2 called that the earliest realistic window. A later 2027 debut was described as more likely.

That lines up with the leaker’s earlier claims. Those suggested AMD may lead with the mid-range AT2 die in 2027, with the rest of the family following in 2028. As always, these are unconfirmed and AMD hasn’t committed to dates. Treat every specific here as a rumor until AMD says otherwise.

AMD’s Linux driver work has already started adding RDNA 5 support, including GDDR7, which is consistent with silicon that is still a fair way from retail. Earlier reports had AMD targeting clocks above 3.4 GHz, which is the sort of detail that leaks early in a long bring-up. AMD has also already confirmed that the next Xbox uses a custom RDNA 5 SoC in 2027. Matching a desktop launch to console timing has precedent.

A June 2027 unveil would come about 27 months after the RX 9070 XT launched in March 2025, and AMD’s last two generational gaps ran just over two years. A second-half launch stretches it a bit, but not unprecedentedly.

NVIDIA’s next-generation GeForce cards are also rumored to have slipped into 2028 (Ed: It seems they slip a year every six months?). Memory makers are pointing every spare wafer at AI customers, and new consumer GPUs would launch into a market where GDDR7 is expensive and scarce.

So what should you do? If you need a card now, the current lineup is what you’ll be living with for at least another year. The Radeon RX 9070 XT has aged well, and as we noted recently, it now costs less than an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB at some retailers. Waiting for RDNA 5 is a reasonable choice only if your current GPU still has a year or more in it.

what I am thinking the RDNA 5 launch will play out like:

(given that Lisa Su said that AMD will be ready for the xbox next year & AMD is getting crushed by the prosumer versions of 5090/5080,)

  1. computex (Jun) 2027 — RDNA 5 architecture reveal
  2. Q3 2027 — AT0 prosumer launch
  3. Q4 2027 — AT2 launch for gamers
  4. Q1 2028 — Medusa Premium (AT4) launch for laptops
  5. Q2 2028 — Medusa Halo (AT3) launch (to replace gorgon halo)
  6. Q3. 2028 — Medusa Premium (AT4) handhelds
