Entertainment Weekly has published a new interview with director James Cameron regarding his highly anticipated but long-gestating Avatar sequel.
With it comes a handful of brand-new photos of the still largely secretive film. Three of the photos are behind-the-scenes shots that offer a glimpse into the heavily hyped underwater motion-capture tech that’s been oft reported for Avatar 2, while another appears to be a screenshot of a scene from the actual movie, teasing a gorgeous, tropical world.

“It sounds kind of nuts, the process,” Cameron said regarding the making of multiple Avatar sequels. “I mean, if Avatar hadn’t made so much damn money, we’d never do this — because it’s kind of crazy.”
“Ultimately, the sequels are a story about family, and the lengths parents will go through to keep that family together and keep them safe,” said producer Jon Landau. “I always say that Jim’s movies have universal themes — and really, there’s no more universal theme than family.”
Cameron’s IMDb page suggests that are at least four Avatar sequels in the works, with the furthest one off being Avatar 5, which is slated for 2028. Avatar 2 is slated for release in a year on December 16, 2022.
