Control

We are using the latest version of the new game Control.  For our testing we are using the in-game quality presets for overall graphics and also using the NV Ray Tracing preset for cards that support NVIDIA Ray Tracing.  We are running this game in DX12.  We are gathering real-world gameplay utilizing a custom run-through in the Cafeteria and Dead Letters area in the game with combat.

Please note, in all the game graphs to follow the Overclocked performance of the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING video card is set to the highest overclock explained in this review.  That is 2.1GHz GPU and 15.9GHz memory.  The GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition is running at its default frequency.

The bar colored orange in all the graphs indicates the card with the fastest performance.

In Control at the high graphics preset the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING results in 58.6 average FPS.  When we overclock the video card performance goes up to 62.8 average FPS.  Our GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition at default frequency hits 61 average FPS.  At 61 FPS the GeForce RTX 2080 FE is slightly faster than the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING.  However, when overclocked the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING is faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE by 3%.

Firstly, it is interesting that RTX 2080 FE and the default factory overclock boost clock on the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING are so close in performance, to begin with.  But then when we overclock the ASUS RTX 2070 SUPER card, we actually exceed the performance of RTX 2080 FE.

In real-world terms, these performance levels are all very close and would be hard to detect in fast gameplay.  However, that is exactly the point, that they would be hard to tell apart.  This means the gameplay experience is really the same with the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING overclocked.

In this graph above we have enabled “Medium” NVIDIA Ray Tracing preset in addition to “High” graphics preset.  Even though the GeForce RTX 2080 has more RT Cores and Tensor Cores, the overclocked ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING is 5% faster! Even with just the factory overclock on the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING, it is still right on par with default GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition performance.

When we lessen the burden by lowering the graphics preset to “Low” but still leaving on “Medium” NVIDIA Ray Tracing we still see the same pattern.  The overclocked ASUS card is 4% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE.
