Does it beat RTX 2080 Founders Edition?
Introduction
Today we have an interesting review, this is a follow-up from our previous ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING video card review. If you haven’t read that review, please read it first. In that review, we take a look at our first custom retail add-in-board partner video card based on the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU.
The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING is the highest-end SKU from ASUS based on this GPU. This video card has a high price premium of $589 versus the MSRP of a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition at $499.
In that review, we compared this video card with a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition as well as a GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition. The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING video card overclocked very well in our review. We managed to get it up to a whopping 2.1GHz GPU frequency and 15.9GHz memory frequency gaming smoothly. That brought its performance way up and greatly exceeded the GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition as well as the RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition.
Only one question remains now, because this video card overclocked so well, and performs very fast for an RTX 2070 SUPER video card, is it now fast enough to reach original GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition performance? We aren’t talking about RTX 2080 SUPER, but rather the original RTX 2080. It’s an interesting question, and an interesting comparison to find out.
GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition
In this review today we are going to take the GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition and compare it directly to the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G at default performance and at its overclocked 2.1GHz/15.9GHz (GPU/Mem) performance.
The goal is to see how fast the ASUS RTX 2070 SUPER card is at default and overclocked compare to a GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition. The question being asked is if an overclocked RTX 2070 SUPER can reach the performance of a GeForce RTX 2080? The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING is a cheaper video card than a GeForce RTX 2080 still, so if it can reach the same performance, at a cheaper price, it’s a real value.
The GeForce RTX 2080 and Founders Edition was launched in September of 2018. The GeForce RTX 2080 (non-Founders Edition) had a launch MSRP of $699 and the Founders Edition had a launch MSRP of $799. There is actually a real GPU clock frequency difference between the regular standard RTX 2080 and the RTX 2080 Founders Edition. The Founders Edition is clocked higher. A standard RTX 2080 is clocked at a boost clock of 1710MHz while the Founders Edition is clocked at 1800MHz. Otherwise, the two are the same with 8GB of GDDR6 at 14GHz. They both have 2944 CUDA Cores, 64 ROPs and 184 TMUs. They both have 368 Tensor Cores and 46 RT Cores.
For our testing today we are using the Founders Edition of the GeForce RTX 2080, so it is clocked higher than the standard GeForce RTX 2080. This closer represents a factory overclock on custom retail add-in-board partner video cards which most people buy.

GeForce RTX 2080 – Turing, TU104, 12nm FinFET, 2944 CUDA Cores, 96 ROPs, 184 TMUs, 368 Tensor Cores, 46 RT Cores, 1800MHz Boost Clock Founders Edition, 8GB, GDDR6, 14GHz, 256-bit, 448GB/sec memory bandwidth.
Interestingly, memory configuration and performance are exactly the same between the two. The differences lie in core counts and clock speed only. Therefore, if we can increase the clock speed enough on the RTX 2070 SUPER, it has the potential to reach RTX 2080 performance based on that alone. The potential is there.
