8GB+ Performance

As we mentioned on page 3, because of the VRAM graphics setting limitation that is imposed, we have to compare the video cards on equal terms, by their VRAM capacity.  Only in this way can we run each video card at the highest supported in-game quality settings, and then compare them apples-to-apples.

Therefore, on this first page, we are taking all of the video cards with 8GB of VRAM which are capable of running “Ultra Nightmare” quality setting and comparing them.  We will compare at 4K, 1440p and 1080p.  Only these video cards shown were allowed to run at the highest quality setting of “Ultra Nightmare” due to having 8GB of VRAM.

4K

DOOM Eternal Graph

Starting at 4K are the three cards that had the performance to be able to run at 4K.  We are comparing the Radeon RX 5700 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 FE and ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 2080 Ti at “Ultra Nightmare” settings at 4K.  It is clear the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti takes the lead and is way ahead offering over 100FPS average at 4K with the highest in-game settings.  It is 42% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE which pulls in 71FPS average.  The slowest video card is the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT at 50FPS average.

In terms of playability at 4K, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is clearly the winner with the best performance and experience at the highest in-game settings.  The GeForce RTX 2080 FE comes close, but we actually found lowering it down to “Ultra” smoothed out performance in some rough areas.  For the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT however, we had to move the game all the way down to “Medium” quality to make it playable at 4K.

1440p

DOOM Eternal Graph

At 1440p we, of course, see the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti take a big lead.  In terms of NVIDIA versus AMD though it is looking like NVIDIA is taking the performance lead over AMD GPUs in this game.  The fastest video card AMD has, the Radeon RX 5700 XT cannot overtake the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER FE video card.  The 2070 SUPER FE is 20% faster.  That said, the Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT are certainly playable at these settings average near and over 100FPS average.  So even though NVIDIA technically takes the win, the gameplay experience, and highest playable settings are exactly the same from the Radeon RX 5700 up to the top at 1440p with the highest in-game settings.

The SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB video card is on this graph because it has 8GB of VRAM and can run this quality setting as you can see.  It even averages near 60FPS in this run-through.  Though, in our testing, there are some rough spots where the performance dips.  We don’t consider this setting playable on it, you’d want to lower to “High” settings on the RX 5500 XT 8GB to smooth it out.  It just goes to show though how VRAM affects this game.

1080p

DOOM Eternal Graph

At 1080p the same pattern continues, now the RTX 2080 FE and RTX 2080 Ti allow over 200FPS average, which is an amazing performance.  The SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB video card is now very playable at “Ultra Nightmare” at 1080p.

What’s really going to impress you is the fact that this level of gameplay experience is superior to even faster video cards like the Radeon RX 5600 XT, simply because this card has 8GB of VRAM and can run this setting.  You see, the Radeon RX 5600 XT cannot because with only 6GB it maxes out at “Ultra” settings at 1080p even though it has the performance for it.
