Adult Swim and Crunchyroll have announced that Sega’s cult-classic RPG franchise, Shenmue, is getting its own 13-episode anime series. There aren’t any story details yet, but creator Yu Suzuki will be executive producing, which means that the series should line up pretty well with the games.

A visual teaser suggests that the anime could be a re-telling of Shenmue 1 and 2 instead of being a follow-up to the third installment, which released in November 2019 after a highly successful Kickstarter campaign. Series heroine Shenhua Ling can be seen wearing her outfit from the 2001 sequel.

“The third Crunchyroll and Adult Swim collaboration, based on the classic SEGA Dreamcast game series, will be a 13 episode series with animation production from Telecom Animation Film (Tower of God, Lupin the Third: Part 5), directed by Chikara Sakurai (Magimoji Rurumo, One-Punch Man Season 2),” Crunchyroll wrote. “Shenmue creator and game designer Yu Suzuki will act as Executive Producer for the project. Further details will be released at a later date.”
