Three months ago, over 160,000 players logged in to say goodbye. Now Bungie says the goodbye was premature.
In a post on Bungie.net titled “The Next Chapter for Bungie”, the studio committed to restoring content it spent years removing. Studio leadership pledged to pull Destiny 2’s removed campaigns, destinations and raids out of cold storage, while leaving the door open to new Destiny stories and even new games. Bungie calls the restoration a first step, with more details on the unvaulting effort promised in the coming months. The line fans will be quoting for a while: “Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future.”
Bungie says Marathon was never meant to replace Destiny, and admits the game did not reach as many players as it had hoped and needs to evolve beyond the genre constraints the studio placed on it.
This is a stunning reversal from where things stood in June, when the final update went live and 160,000+ players showed up for the sendoff. Before that, most Bungie employees reportedly didn’t know Destiny 2 was ending until it was announced publicly. The financial backdrop explains the pivot. Sony recorded roughly $765 million in combined impairment losses against Bungie in its FY2025 results, tied to Destiny 2’s underperformance and Marathon’s lukewarm launch.
The Destiny Content Vault existed partly to keep the install size under control. Bringing back years of campaigns and raids means a bigger game on your SSD, and Bungie hasn’t said how it will handle that. Bungie leadership has also acknowledged that reversing years of vaulting decisions will take real engineering work, not a simple toggle. Nobody should expect the Leviathan back next Tuesday.
Our take: this is the right call, arriving at the last possible moment. The vault broke trust with Destiny’s most dedicated players, and a studio doesn’t admit its new flagship came up short unless it has no better cards to play. Promises are cheap, though. The real test is the first unvaulted raid, and whether Bungie can give it the kind of spark that Marathon’s Season 2 “Nightfall” push never quite managed.
