A live-action series based on SingleTrac’s popular vehicular combat franchise, Twisted Metal, is in the works at Sony Pictures TV and PlayStation Productions. The development has been confirmed by Variety, which published a report this morning noting that the show would be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick—the scribes behind Ryan Reynolds’ popular Deadpool films. Twisted Metal is being described as an “action comedy.”

“’Twisted Metal’ is one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans.”

“The show is about a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland,” Variety explained. “With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck, whom fans of the game will know as Sweet Tooth.”

Canadian actor Will Arnett (Arrested Development, The Lego Movie), who is executive producing the Twisted Metal TV series via his Electric Avenue production company, is rumored to be voicing Sweet Tooth in a cameo. The show will presumably feature other popular character/vehicles from the franchise, such as Mr. Grimm, Darkside, Warthog, Spectre, and Axel (a guy strapped to two huge wheels).
