Tesla has begun rolling out a new update that adds Steam support to select Tesla vehicles, allowing owners of the EVs to play thousands of titles from Valve’s popular Steam gaming platform, including Cyberpunk 2077 and one of this year’s most acclaimed video games, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware’s Elden Ring.

“Access the Steam store directly from your Tesla,” reads a portion of the release notes for the 2022.44.25.1 update shared on Not a Tesla App, a website run by Tesla fans and supporters. “Buy and play immersive games that have been verified on Steam Deck. With Steam’s cloud synchronization, resume your game from your Tesla or any Steam device. To access Steam, tap the Application Launcher Arcade.”

The notes go on to clarify that Steam game support is available on select Tesla Model S and X vehicles (year 2022+) with 16 GB DDR memory, and that Premium Connectivity is required.

“You can play Cyberpunk, Elden Ring and 1000s of other games in your car with an epic sound system!!” Elon Musk tweeted in response to the rollout, pointing out that it even works with keyboard and mouse.

As to whether a retrofit would be available for enabling Steam game support on older Model S and X vehicles, Musk replied positively, tweeting a simple “Yes.”

Gaming continues to be one of Tesla’s more unique marketing points, with their center console displays already including support for many specially ported games, such as 2019’s Cuphead.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was prompted to investigate Tesla last year when it released an update that allowed drivers to play games while the car was in motion.
