Gameplay Performance Continued

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2.  We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing.  We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute.  For our benchmark, we are using a custom manual run-through at the end of the game hopping between rooftops, as well as free-roaming on the ground city level, as well as a forested area, in the daylight.

In Dying Light 2 we are running at 4K raster at High Quality mode and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 5% faster with AMD Smart Access Memory ON. The Radeon RX 7900 XT is not as much, just 2%, but it is still there. FSR2 does see a larger result, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 10% faster with SAM ON and the Radeon RX 7900 XT with FSR2 is 7% faster with SAM ON.

Now we have turned on the highest level of Ray Tracing at 4K, which is much more intensive, and compute-focused. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 8% faster with SAM ON and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 2% faster with SAM ON. With FSR2 the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 9% faster with SAM ON and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 6% faster with SAM ON.

Now we are at 1440p raster, and we do see bigger gains here. With SAM ON the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 12% faster and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 7% faster.

Now we have turned on Ray Tracing at 1440p and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 10% faster with SAM ON and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 7% faster with SAM ON.

Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 was released in October of 2021 and uses the Dunia Engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and turned on. We utilize the “Ultra” graphics preset which sets all options to the highest game settings. This game supports FSR upscaling.

In Far Cry 6, we are running at 4K at the highest settings, we find the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 5% faster with SAM ON and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 6% faster with SAM ON. FSR sees a difference, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 5% faster and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 5% faster with FSR.

We have turned on DXR at 4K in Far Cry 6, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 3% faster with SAM ON and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 4% faster with SAM ON. With FSR the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 6% faster with SAM ON and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 6% faster with SAM ON.

Oddly, unlike other games, we see less of a difference at 1440p in Far Cry 6. The performance is the same on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, but there is a 4% difference on the Radeon RX 7900 XT.

With DXR on at 1440p the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is again identical with SAM, but the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 5% faster with SAM ON.

Very interesting results.

Good work !!!

It would also be interesting to see the effect of ReBAR on an Intel system vs. SAM on an AMD mobo. Hell, then you could compare the setting with AMD and Nvidia GPUs on each platform. Cause you have unlimited time to run benchmarks, of course;).

Thanks for testing this!

I never read much into it and I thought SAM was ReBAR on AMD systems.

Not sure what the difference is.

Grimlakin

Yea found I had Sam on but it wasn't working because of csm. I turned that off.

@Brent_Justice Your data in the review got a brief mention here on the TPU forums, where SAM was asked by a forum member to Wizzard (posts #65 & #66).

I'm not subbed over there, a response I would pose is that while yes AMD SAM utilizes Resizeable BAR, (it is the road by which it travels, which has to be on) AMD SAM has a little more 'special sauce' either via software, and or hardware combination, when in combination with AMD's platform, that provides a higher uplift of performance in select games. AMD has done a little extra with ReBAR. It's not just a "toggled-on" scenario, but there is a little secret sauce adding to the ingredients, enhancing it more. It would be a worthwhile conversation to have.

They backup what I've said. So it isn't just me.

Another one, Enable Smart Access Memory, it does stuff.
