Gameplay Performance at 4K
We are going to start with a focus on the 4K gameplay performance with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX video card in raster performance on this page. Ray Tracing will be on a separate page. We will include FSR and DLSS performance on the same graph in the games that are supported. We will use DLSS on NVIDIA GPUs and FSR on AMD GPUs. For video card comparisons we are using an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition. Our overclock is set at 3300MHz for the Max Frequency Slider in AMD Radeon Software, and memory is overclocked to 21GHz with Power Target at +15% and fans at 100%.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.0
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.0 was released on October 27, 2022, on the PC and uses the IW 9.0 gaming engine. The game supports all upscaling methods, including NVIDIA DLSS, NVIDIA Image Scaling, AMD FSR 1.0, AMD Fidelity FX CAS, and Intel XeSS. We use the highest quality option of each. We customize every graphics setting to the maximum value for the best image quality and enable everything. We use the built-in benchmark.
In Call of Duty Modern Warfare II at 4K and Maximum Graphics Settings the overclock on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX improves performance by almost 7%. The overclock brings performance from a playable 120FPS at 4K to 128FPS. At 128FPS the Radeon RX 7900 XTX matches the GeForce RTX 4090 FE in performance and overclocked it is 35% faster than the GeForce RTX 4080 FE and 66% faster than the Radeon RX 6900 XT. With FSR the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX takes the lead in performance.
F1 2022
F1 2022 was released on June 28th, 2022 on the PC and uses Codemasters Ego engine. The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, AMD FidelityFX, and FSR. We are going to run the game with the highest quality settings of “Ultra High” and TAA+FidelityFX. We will enable DLSS and FSR as needed at the Quality setting for both. We will utilize the built-in benchmark in the Imola track, in dry conditions with a far-chasing cam.
In F1 2022 at 4K and Ultra High settings overclocking the Radeon RX 7900 XTX improves performance by 5%. Overclocking brings performance from a playable 175FPS to 184FPS. At 184FPS the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is still in-between the GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4090, but it is closer now to the RTX 4090. Compared to the GeForce RTX 4080 the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 19% faster. Compared to the GeForce RTX 4090, the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 10% slower, so it does edge a little bit closer to the RTX 4090 with the overclock. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 45% faster. With FSR the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX takes the lead in performance above everything else.
Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine. The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2. We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing. We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute. For our benchmark, we are using a custom manual run-through at the end of the game hopping between rooftops, as well as free-roaming on the ground city level, as well as a forested area, in the daylight.
In Dying Light 2 at 4K with “High Quality” preset overclocking the Radeon RX 7900 XTX provides 10% more performance, which is pretty decent for a game like this. It brings performance from a playable 92.2FPS up to 101.6FPS. At this overclocked performance level it now exceeds the GeForce RTX 4080 in performance, whereas it did not before the overclock. With the overclock the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is now 5% faster than the GeForce RTX 4080. Compared to the GeForce RTX 4090 the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 22% slower. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 49% faster. With FSR enabled, the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is also faster than the GeForce RTX 4080 with DLSS, but just a small amount. The GeForce RTX 4090 still has a gigantic lead with DLSS.
Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 was released in October of 2021 and uses the Dunia Engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and turned on. We utilize the “Ultra” graphics preset which sets all options to the highest game settings. This game supports FSR upscaling.
In Far Cry 6 at 4K and “Ultra” graphics settings overclocking the Radeon RX 7900 XTX improves performance by 8%. It takes performance from a playable 121FPS to 131FPS. At this performance level the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX now outperforms the GeForce RTX 4090 by 2% and the GeForce RTX 4080 by a big 26%. FSR performance is also faster than the RTX 4090’s performance with FSR. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 56% faster.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.61 and perform a long manual run-through driving in the game’s open world. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings, mainly “Ultra”. This game supports DLSS and FSR.
In Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K and “Ultra” preset overclocking the Radeon RX 7900 XTX improves performance by 6%. It takes a playable 70FPS and brings that up to 74-75FPS. At this performance level the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is now closer to the GeForce RTX 4090 than it is the GeForce RTX 4080. The overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 14% faster than the GeForce RTX 4080 FE and 13% slower than the GeForce RTX 4090. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 72% faster. With FSR2 performance it scales the same as without, just faster, FSR2 adds 12% more performance.
Watch Dogs Legion
Watch Dogs Legion was released on the PC in October of 2020 and uses the Disrupt game engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and enabled for testing. We use the built-in graphics preset of “Ultra” for testing. This game supports DLSS upscaling.
In Watch Dogs Legion at 4K and “Ultra” settings overclocking the Radeon RX 7900 XTX improves performance by 5%, bringing it from a playable 97FPS to 102FPS. This edges it a little closer to the RTX 4090, but it is still 12% slower. Compared to the GeForce RTX 4080 the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 17% faster. It’s closer to RTX 4090 performance than RTX 4080 performance when overclocked. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 62% faster.
