Intel Introduces Thunderbolt 5 Connectivity Standard with Up to 120 Gbps of Bandwidth: First Devices Expected in 2024

Intel has announced that computers and accessories based on Thunderbolt 5, a new iteration of the industry-leading connectivity solution that promises to deliver significant improvements in connectivity speed and bandwidth benefits for PC users, are expected to be available starting next year in 2024. According to a press release that Intel shared today, Thunderbolt 5 is capable of delivering 80 gigabits per second (Gbps) of bi-directional bandwidth, and, with a technology called Bandwidth Boost, can provide up to 120 Gbps for what Intel has described as the best display experience. Intel says that this is three times more bandwidth than what Thunderbolt 4 offers.

“Thunderbolt 5 will provide industry-leading performance and capability for connecting computers to monitors, docks, storage and more,” said Jason Ziller, general manager of the Client Connectivity Division at Intel. “Intel is excited to continue our tradition of leadership for wired connectivity solutions. Thunderbolt is now the mainstream port for connectivity on mobile PCs, and delivering the next generation of performance with Thunderbolt 5 will provide even more capability for the most demanding users.”

“Microsoft is excited to closely collaborate with Intel to bring the latest USB4 standard to Windows customers,” said Ian LeGrow, corporate vice president of Core OS product management at Microsoft Corp. “Thunderbolt 5 is fully USB 80Gbps standard compliant to support the next generation of high-performance displays, storage and connectivity.”
