GeForce RTX 40 Series Gets SUPER

NVIDIA CES 2024 Press Deck GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series

Now what you have all been waiting for, NVIDIA will be releasing three new GeForce RTX GPUs for 2024, starting right here in January. These products are all launching this month, staggered throughout the month. What you are wondering is how they will fit into the product stack, what the pricing will be, and what becomes of the current video cards. We finally have all the information you’ve been waiting for, so let’s dive in.

GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER

The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER will be available on January 31st with an MSRP of $999! It will have a Founders Edition model, as well as partner cards. As we recall, NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 4080 in November of 2022 with an MSRP of $1,199, so it has now been 1 year and 2 months since its launch already, my how time flies. The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER sits above the GeForce RTX 4080 on performance, but yet is coming in at a $200 cheaper price tag, so you actually do get a performance upgrade, and a cost reduction, creating a value increase. Naturally, this is a big upgrade even from the previous generation GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, or previous to that RTX 2080 SUPER.

The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is based on the same Ada Lovelace AD103 die as the GeForce RTX 4080, but now contains the full specifications, or full die, of AD103. You will find that the SM count increases, and the CUDA core count has been increased, along with all other subsequent RT cores and Tensor Cores. It also has 16GB of GDDR6X similar to the RTX 4080, but the memory speed has been increased to provide even more memory bandwidth at 736GB/s. Remarkably, the TGP remains the same as the RTX 4080 at just 320W. It also has the same RTX features and AV1 encoders.

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER will be available on January 24th with an MSRP of $799! This one will not have a Founders Edition model, it will instead be partner-driven with partner-made models. As we recall, NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti in January of 2023 with an MSRP of $799, so we are exactly 1 year from that launch. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER sits above the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti on performance, but yet is launching at the exact same price the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti launched at.

This means you are getting an upgrade in performance (and VRAM as you’ll see), slotted into the same price, which again creates value. This is typically what we expect from generation to generation, and it is nice we are seeing it in a new product refresh. This should be a good upgrade from the likes of the RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 2070 SUPER.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is a bigger upgrade compared to the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti than the RTX 4080 SUPER is to the RTX 4080. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is also based on the same Ada Lovelace AD103 die that the RTX 4080 and RTX 4080 SUPER are made from, only cut down. This is a complete change and upgrade, from the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti which used the AD104 die.

This gives NVIDIA a lot of options, such as giving the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16GB of VRAM instead of 12GB on the RTX 4070 Ti. In addition, there will be an SM count increase, CUDA core count increase, and of course RT cores and Tensor Core increases, all across the board here.

In addition to the 16GB of VRAM, the bandwidth and memory speed will also increase giving the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER a memory bandwidth of 672GB/s, which is a substantial upgrade over the 504GB/s on the RTX 4070 Ti. Amazingly once again, the TGP still remains the same at 285W just like the RTX 4070 Ti. You also get all the RTX features and AV1 encoding.

GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER

The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER will be available on January 17th with an MSRP of $599! This one will have a Founders Edition model available, as well as partner cards. As we recall, NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 4070 in April of 2023 with an MSRP of $599, so we are about 9 months from that launch. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER will sit above the GeForce RTX 4070 on performance but is being slotted in right at the same price point. Therefore once again we are getting a performance improvement, slotting in at the same price, creating value in this segment.

The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER will be using the same Ada Lovelace AD104 die as the GeForce RTX 4070, but utilizing more SM units, 20% more CUDA cores, RT Cores, and Tensor Cores, everything is increased. It does still have 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM providing 504GB/s of memory bandwidth, same as the RTX 4070. We also see a TGP increase to 220W compared to the 200W on the RTX 4070. It also has all the same RTX features, DLSS 3, and AV1 encoding.

A SUPER Upgrade

If you are coming from older generation hardware, there is no better time to upgrade than now with the SUPER series, according to NVIDIA. Even the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is relatively faster than the GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3070. However, if you were on older hardware such as the GeForce RTX 20 series, you would see massive gains in performance. Performance isn’t the only benefit however, there’s also a big power efficiency increase. You will be achieving much better performance and much less power draw.

The New Product Stack

The big question on your mind is what becomes of the GeForce RTX 4080, 4070 Ti, and 4070? Well, it is simple, the GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4070 Ti will be end-of-life. This means those video cards will go out of production, and eventually dry up in the market. The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER replaces the GeForce RTX 4080 by providing better performance, at a new lower price. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER replaces the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti by providing better performance, at the same price.

However, the GeForce RTX 4070 remains in production and instead gets an official price drop to $549. That’s right, the GeForce RTX 4070 gets a price drop to $549 instead of $599, letting the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER replace it at that price point, and offer substantially more performance. That means the GeForce RTX 4070 will still remain as a new midrange contender.

Therefore, as you can see in the above slide, the GeForce RTX 4090 remains at $1,599 MSRP, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER sits below it now at $999, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER sits below that at $799, then the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER sits below that at $599, then the GeForce RTX 4070 sits below that at $549, then the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB and 8GB remain in production at their same MSRPs as well, and then the GeForce RTX 4060 at the bottom at $299. We did confirm that the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB and 8GB models will continue to remain in production, and with no changes to MSRP respectively.
