Gameplay Performance

On this page, we are going to focus on the 1440p gameplay performance with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition video card.  We are including the GeForce RTX 4070 FE to see the performance differences. We are including the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT since it is the closest competitor from AMD, though keep in mind the Radeon RX 7800 XT is cheaper, $499 MSRP, and there are add-in-partner cards, and factory overclocked cards, that close the gap in pricing. We will include DLSS and FSR performance on the same graph in the games that are supported.  We will use DLSS on NVIDIA GPUs and FSR on AMD GPUs.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 was launched on the PC in October of 2023 and is based on the Northlight Engine. The game supports detailed graphics and ray tracing with path tracing support. This game defaults to DLSS or FSR but does allow Native AA resolution settings with DLSS or FSR respectively. We can utilize Super Sampling upscaling, and for our graphs, we will just call that DLSS or FSR. We utilize the graphics presets to set High quality, as well as the Ray Tracing presets to set Low or High quality. We use a manual run-through in the Initiation 5: Room 665 chapter.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition Alan Wake 2 Performance Graph

In Alan Wake 2 we are running at the “High” quality preset at 1440p resolution. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER FE allows a playable gameplay experience at 73FPS without upscaling. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER FE is 18% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070 FE, so that’s a nice uplift in this demanding game. The Radeon RX 7800 XT actually beat the GeForce RTX 4070 by 5%, but the new GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER takes the crown back and is 12% faster than the Radeon RX 7800 XT. Utilizing DLSS upscaling improves performance by 50% bringing performance to over 100FPS at 1440p.

Starfield

Starfield was released on the PC in September of 2023 and is based on the Creation Engine 2. This game supports DLSS and FSR as well as Dynamic Resolution. When using upscaling, Dynamic Resolution is enabled, and we utilize the 75% slider option, which is the default setting when Ultra settings are applied. We are using the highest Ultra settings in the game for all testing, and for upscaling, we use the highest quality settings. We use a manual run-through in the New Atlantis area encompassing all areas.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition Starfield Performance Graph

In Starfield, we are running at 1440p with Ultra settings. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER allows a very smooth and playable gameplay experience at 74FPS in the game. This is a 13% performance improvement over the GeForce RTX 4070. The Radeon RX 7800 XT does extremely well in this game and is 10% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070. The new GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER does edge out the Radeon RX 7800 XT by 3%, but this is a very small difference, and in gameplay, the two video cards provide the same gameplay experience. Upscaling doesn’t do a ton for performance in this game, but using DLSS quality mode brings performance up another 15% to 84FPS.

Returnal

Returnal was launched on the PC in February of 2023 and is based on Unreal Engine 4. The game supports real-time ray tracing effects, particle systems, and volumetric rendering. We utilize the graphics preset to set EPIC graphics settings with unlocked framerate, and everything is enabled except ray tracing, we have screen-space reflections on. We use the built-in benchmark.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition Returnal Performance Graph

At EPIC settings in Returnal at 1440p the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER allows a more than playable experience at over 100FPS, but again every card here does also. We find that the RTX 4070 SUPER is about 20% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070, which is pretty impressive. The Radeon RX 7800 XT is once again faster than the GeForce RTX 4070 by 12%. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER edges out the Radeon RX 7800 XT by 7%. Once again, at these differences, the actual in-game experience is rather close. Enabling DLSS upscaling improves performance by 23% up to 135FPS. Interestingly, the FSR performance on the Radeon RX 7800 XT is faster than DLSS at the Quality setting here, but they aren’t too far off.

Forspoken

Forspoken was released on January 24th, 2023, on the PC and uses the Luminous Engine. The game supports all upscaling methods and Ray Tracing. We are going to customize the settings and enable the highest graphics settings, including Ultra High Texture Memory. We use the built-in benchmark.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition Forspoken Performance Graph

In Forspoken, we are running at the highest settings at 1440p. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER allows a very smooth and playable experience at 96FPS. This is a 14% performance improvement over the GeForce RTX 4070. The Radeon RX 7800 XT edges out the RTX 4070 slightly by 2%. However, the new GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER pulls ahead of the Radeon RX 7800 XT by a much greater amount, 12%. Using DLSS improves performance by 27% up to 122FPS.

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition

Chernobylite, based on Unreal Engine 4, was released on the PC in 2021, but the Enhanced Edition update for the game was released in April 2022. The Enhanced Edition provides a visual overhaul of the game with better textures, plus introduces tessellation and ray tracing features. It features raytraced reflections, raytraced translucency, raytraced caustics, and raytraced dynamic diffuse global illumination. It supports upscaling, and we use the highest quality. We use the built-in benchmark.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition Chernobylite Enhanced Edition Performance Graph

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition is very playable at 1440p with Ultra settings at 155FPS on the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER. In this game, the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is 16% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070, not bad for raw raster performance improvement, this game is very texture-heavy. The Radeon RX 7800 XT does a bit worse in this game, comparitively, the RTX 4070 is 18% faster than the Radeon RX 7800 XT. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is well ahead of the Radeon RX 7800 XT, by a whopping 37% in this game. Enabling DLSS brings up performance to 200FPS!

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2.  We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing.  We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute.  We use the built-in benchmark.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition Dying Light 2 Performance Graph

In Dying Light 2 the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is very playable at 1440p with the highest settings. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER offers a pretty big performance difference over the GeForce RTX 4070, it is 22% faster. The Radeon RX 7800 XT does well in this game and is 8% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is 13% faster than the Radeon RX 7800 XT. Enabling DLSS improves performance by 32%.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 2.0 and utilize the built-in benchmark. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings to “Ultra”.  We utilize the highest quality upscaling.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition Cyberpunk 2077 Performance Graph

In Cyberpunk 2077 the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER easily handles this game at 1440p with “Ultra” settings without needing to use upscaling at 90FPS. This is a very large 28% performance improvement over the GeForce RTX 4070, which is pretty impressive, and makes a big difference. The Radeon RX 7800 XT is also performing very well in this game and provides 88FPS average, and that pretty much matches the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER performance in this game, for less money, since it is a cheaper video card. That’s impressive, to be honest, and bodes well for Radeon RX 7800 XT performance in intensive shader games such as this. Enabling DLSS improves performance by 21%. DLSS and FSR performance at the highest qualities are also matched for performance in Cyberpunk 2077.

I can't wait for the 4070 Ti SUPER review. I may hate the name but I think that, at least on paper, it looks like a great performance/value card, that is if one can get it anywhere close to MSRP. However, this card isn't too shabby either but like the review shows the RX7800XT gives it a run for the money but also costs less.

Got an Asus 4070 Super DUAL version incoming for the Kiddo.

Will be interesting to see how it does on his 5800x3d with DDR4-3600 RAM in an MSI B350 Tomahawk which has been upgraded in place since his Ryzen 5 1600x.

That says a lot about AMDs design and engineering to have one of their most.advanced CPUs running stably on an older motherboard from a First gen am4 socket.

Yep.

As long as you don't need Gen4 PCIe (which for gaming, you really don't) the MSI B350 Tomahawk is a real trooper.

In an era of increasingly expensive motherboards, it was $130 when new (I believe, I think that is what I paid for it) and it has just continued to kick ass. Very happy with that motherboard.

MSI technically lists the BIOS required in order to run the X3D chips as a perpetual beta BIOS, but in my stress testing it has been rock solid.

This Techreport writeup is what gave me the confidence to go-ahead and give it a try:.

While motherboards usually don't have a huge impact on performance, it is interesting to see that the old B350 Tomahawk is often among the better performers in their test, even better than the actual X570 in many cases.

That was just a brain fart, but apparently Techreport is still around, but they were sold in 2019 and topics covered are very different now.

Comes across as some sort of AI generated crypto-bro pump-and-dump garbage now to me.
