Overclocking the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER WINDFORCE OC
Before overclocking, we will determine a baseline GPU clock speed. Both NVIDIA and AMD have dynamic base speeds, both have a “Boost” speed. (GPU Boost or Boost Clock, depending on the brand.) Generally, either brand’s card will exceed the “Boost” dynamically. To determine the “baseline” we record the GPU frequency in our Cyberpunk 2077 manual run-through. This is a lengthy manual run at Ultra settings. Data is captured for frequency, temperature, voltage, and power using GPU-Z sensor to log the data.
On our overclock graph, the baseline default clock speed is 2790MHz. The clock is essentially “glued” to that speed the entire manual run-through. Compared to the factory overclocked speed of 2625MHz, that’s 6% extra without doing a thing but install and turn on. We see the overclocked speed is a flat 3000MHz. Our overclock gives us 14% extra over the factory overclock!
To achieve the overclock, we used the GIGABYTE Control Center software. This is found on the video card’s main page. The download is a little bulky, but gives access to control of video card and motherboard functions, RGB, and also chipset and BIOS updates. Here a click on the home>video card icon>performance and you’re there. You can see the settings we used. The GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER WINDFORCE OC 16GB has a locked power slider and VCore setting. All we could adjust was the GPU and memory frequency and temperature limit. (the temperatures are so good here, that is unnecessary). We settled on +200 GPU and + 1500 memory.
A boost in VCore may have allowed more clock speed, but as you see it is locked as is the power slider. We were not able to locate a more up-to-date GCC that may allow these to be adjusted. There is a “beta” MSI Afterburner version that allows VCore adjustment on this video card, however. We did not test it out.
All in all, GCC is a nice and simple software. Adjustments were straightforward and easy to apply. This video card runs very cool with automatic fan settings. We did not have to adjust a thing, although there is software for that. The 80mm fans are surprisingly quiet, essentially inaudible. As we mentioned in the introduction, the 16-pin 12VHPWR connection is at the rear of the PCB on this card and the exhaust is seemingly cooler at this location. Prior NVIDIA cards had the connector in the middle of the card which was quite warm.
