Resident Evil 9 and Monster Hunter Wilds, two of Capcom’s most anticipated games, will both be open-world titles, according to new rumors that have been shared online. Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 7 biohazard, which Capcom launched to critical acclaim in 2021 and 2017 under the RE ENGINE, respectively, already feature semi-open-world features, so this development, if true, may not be too crazy and/or surprising.

Dusk Golem mentioned:

  • “…Capcom often will greenlight new initiatives in 3’s closer together. Decent examples are RE7, RE:2 & DMCV were all Greenlit fairly close together to take advantage of their new RE Engine, & the idea to remake RE:2 inspired them to also take on RE:3 & RE:4 for a remake initiative.”
  • “Dragons Dogma 2 expanded RE Engine functionality for open world games, the two other games building on this tech is Monster Hunter Wild & Resident Evil 9.”
  • “…I’ll additionally add…part of all three project goals has been to retain the series DNA. DD2 is still clearly Dragon’s Dogma, Wild is still clearly Monster Hunter, same will be true for RE9 w/Resident Evil.”

And as for any potential performance issues that these games might launch with:

Generally RE Engine is easy to update when more tech advancements are made, so it’s easy to update projects to the newest version without too many issues. Not perfect, but making it easier was part of the goal with the engine to allow a smoother pipeline.

Fans and critics are saying:

  • “Didnt RE8 do something similar with the village? Its more like a semi open world thing, but if they expand it to a city and dont make unreasonably big and empty it could actually work imo.”
  • “If RE9 goes open world, it would be so immersive with a pursuer enemy-type, similar to Nemesis or Mr. X”
  • “I dont want EVERY GAME to be open world. I love open world but I also love NON open world game . I love the RE formula . I dont see the point of making it open world”
  • “Yikes. Don’t really like the idea of RE9 being open world. Sounds like they are just chasing trends instead of actually innovating. Halo Infinite did open world and it felt lacking in a lot of areas.”
  • “People called me crazy when I told them the next Monster Hunter would be open world, but when Wilds got it’s first reveal trailer, it seemed all but a sure thing.”

Monster Hunter Wilds trailer, which Capcom shared in December 2023:

This brand-new entry in the award-winning Monster Hunter series is now in development and is gearing up to release in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
