DLSS Upscaling and Frame Generation
This section is going to look at DLSS Quality upscaling and Frame Generation performance in several of our most demanding games, which also happen to support Frame Generation. We will use 1440p as well as 4K resolutions for the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition. Raster and Ray Tracing are charted as well. The technical side of Frame Generation is discussed in this review.
Alan Wake 2 at 1440p
In Alan Wake 2 the game is more than playable in raster at 1440p. Although there is a big boost with both DLSS: Quality and DLSS Frame Generation, it simply isn’t needed. In Ray Tracing we do see a nice boost using DLSS: Quality and even more with Frame Generation, 66 and 150%. In both cases, the game is smooth and enjoyable.
Alan Wake 2 at 4K
We see similar issues in 4K resolution. You will need DLSS: Quality to be playable in raster, plus see a big jump when enabling Frame Generation. With Ray Tracing enabled the only salvation is Frame Generation, otherwise you will be stuck in slow motion. Frame Generation however actually doesn’t increase FPS, rather it smooths out the frames. It will look a bit better and smoother, but the overall FPS will be more on the order of 40FPS.
Dying Light 2 at 1440p
Dying Light is already fast enough in the native resolution to give smooth gameplay. In Ray Tracing it may be desirable to use DLSS: Quality for a little boost. Frame generation is simply ridiculously fast, but not necessary in this game and does affect image quality in some instances.
Dying Light 2 at 4K
The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition is remarkably good in 4K in Dying Light 2. Natively it can be playable, but DLSS: Quality is a big boost. Even with Ray Tracing enabled we can reach 60FPS using DLSS: Quality. Frame Generation would be a nice addition here though, adding 40% of smoothness to DLSS: Quality.
Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p
This is another game that plays well natively in raster and very smoothly in Ray Tracing with DLSS: Quality. Frame Generation isn’t really needed here but may be a nice addition with Ray Tracing.
Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K
Well, unfortunately, the buck stops here. The game is simply too much for the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition at this resolution no matter how much smoke and mirrors you throw at it.
