Introduction

In January 2024, NVIDIA released three new “Super” additions to the GeForce RTX 4000 series of graphics cards.  Our coverage of the CES announcement explains all the details.  Today we are evaluating a custom card, the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition. (SKU: TUF-RTX4070S-O12G-GAMING. Full name: ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB GDDR6X OC Edition)

One rather refreshing part of this release is the RTX 4070 Super has the same MSRP as the previously released RTX 4070.  Of course, as always, customization and overclocking do affect the price, so check around.  The  ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition is one of six different RTX 4070 Super cards available from ASUS.

The TUF versions are generally near the top of the stack and have beefed-up cooling, a distinctly subdued appearance, very specific electronic components, and an overclock.    The version we are reviewing today also has a small RGB icon and triple fans. ASUS is a leading PC component manufacturer offering the well-recognized ROG and TUF series of components as well as many others.  Literally, there is very little ASUS doesn’t offer. Also in the ASUS RTX 4070 SUPER stack are the ROG Strix, the Dual White Edition, the Dual EVO Edition, the Dual OC Edition, and the Dual non-OC.

Our launch review covering the RTX 4070 Super Founders Edition has a very detailed discussion of the technical specifications and overall difference between the RTX 4070 Super and the RTX 4070 plain versions. We received a full retail package from ASUS. The MSRP of the Founders Edition RTX 4070 Super is $599.  The current price of the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition card is $679 at Newegg and Amazon.  Check our pricing widget below for the latest pricing. The manufacturer’s warranty period is listed as 3 years.

The Boost clock of our review card is listed at 2595MHz.  This represents a 120MHz increase versus the reference RTX 4070 and Founders Editon RTX 4070 Super clock of 2475MHz.  The memory frequency and maximum power draw are identical to the RTX 4070 plain.

The package we received had a quality “feel” to it.  The video card was well protected in formed foam.  There were accessories included; a card support stand, Velcro cable wrap, and double-headed 12VHPWR adapter.  The card itself is quite hefty and thick.  The top shroud is gray aluminum.  There are three 92mm 11 blade fans each attached to an outer rim, called Axial-Tech by ASUS. The center spins opposite the outer two fans.

The backplate is slotted metal of the same quality and gray color with scattered designs imprinted.  The top shroud stands well off the full-cover heatsink for high-flow heat venting.  The PCB is a machine manufactured for higher reliability as well as using “military spec” components.  There is a package insert describing the various specifications of components.  The 16-pin connection is placed at the rear of the PCB and slotted for easy access.  Overall the fit and finish of the video card is excellent.

This is a hefty video card.  It measures 11 ¾ x 2 ½ x 5 ½ inches.  This is a triple+ slot card.  The weight is 2 pounds 9 ½ ounces.  The card is powered by a 12VHPWR connector. If adopted it requires two separate 8-pin PCIe connectors from the PSU.  The recommended PSU is a minimum of 750 Watts.  The TBP is listed at 220 Watts. There are 3 Display Port 1.4a and one HDMI 2.1a output on the I/O front panel which is made of stainless steel.  A small RGB icon on the far right top edge may be controlled by the ASUS Armory Crate AURA Sync software.

All in all this card performed very well, 20% better than the plain RTX 4070. The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition also overclocked well gaining 6% more performance.
