Conclusion

This review evaluated the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition. We tested at 1440p resolution in both plain rasterized and Ray Tracing environments. The comparison cards were the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X TRIO and the PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE. We had a go at overclocking as well.

Performance

In plain rasterized gameplay, each of our cards was playable at 1440p without upscaling. The games were smooth, enjoyable, and had high FPS results. Upscaling just made things better and was not actually needed for smooth gaming. The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition was at the top of the list here in 5 of 6 games. The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE was 11% faster in Cyberpunk 2077, but overall the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition enjoyed an average of 20% greater FPS compared to the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X TRIO. The margin was 17% over the PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE.

Ray Tracing was a bit more taxing on all three video cards. Only two games were playable for all without upscaling enabled. Essentially all were playable with upscaling. (technically, the PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE was 1 FPS shy in Cyberpunk 2077) The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition was unmatched in Ray Tracing performance. It topped the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X TRIO by 12% and the PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE by 25%. Of course, all was not ideal. To fully enjoy smooth gameplay we had to enable upscaling in every game, still, the gaming was very enjoyable.

We also took a look at DLSS: Quality and Frame Generation performance in three of the games in the suite. We also upped the resolution to 4K to challenge the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition. The card is surprisingly stout at 1440p, even with Ray Tracing enabled. Alan Wake 2 required FrameGeneration to reach 60FPS smoothness, and Dying Light 2 and Cyberpunk did fine with just upscaling alone. At 4K, Alan Wake 2 Ray Tracing requires FrameGeneration, same for Dying Light 2 and Cyberpunk is too much no matter what you do. You will have to pick and choose a little bit to be able to play in 4K on this card, but we demonstrate it is possible.

All in all, the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition is a very capable video card at 1440p with smooth framerates. It handles Ray Tracing in most games very well with DLSS upscaling. It can also provide 4K gaming if you do a little picking and choosing.

Overclocking

Overclocking this video card was very straightforward. ASUS GPU Tweak III is a very full-featured piece of software. It is easy to use and there are excellent written instructions. We reached an overclock of 3010MHZ and boosted performance by an average of 5%. In reviewing GPUZ following each benchmark, it is obvious the card is held back by the power limit of +15%. The memory also boosted well. we arrived at +1500Mhz or an increase from 16.8Gbps to 18Gbps.

This video card is very well constructed and has an outstanding cooler. The card ran on automatic the entire testing and never had the fans above 48%. It was completely quiet. Given how well this video card is constructed, we would set the dials in overclocking and gain the extra FPS. You can run this card hard all day long.

Final Points

The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition is a well-constructed video card. It is cool and quiet. The fit and finish are superb. It has a higher price tag than the standard MSRP RTX 4070 SUPER, however, the premium seems more than worth the extra money. The card overclocks well and was the best performer in raster and Ray Tracing in this review. You will see a 20% improvement on average versus the card it replaces in the line-up. It can also handle 4K gaming under the proper conditions. If you are looking for a suberbly built, quality gaming video card at 1440p this is the one.
