Test Setup
Please read the information on our GPU testing procedures and methodology here. Note that our GPU Testing Bench has been upgraded to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU and AM5 platform.
Note that we have the 1905 BIOS installed, which uses AGESA version Combo AM5 PI 1.1.0.2b. We are using the motherboard’s current default BIOS settings on the latest release BIOS. We have enabled PCI-Express Resizable BAR in the motherboard BIOS. This means we are utilizing Resizable BAR on NVIDIA GPUs and AMD Smart Access Memory on AMD GPUs in all our testing. We have enabled EXPO I in the BIOS for the memory.
We are using a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro with the latest Windows Updates, including the 23H2 Fall 2023 update. We have the latest drivers installed including the latest chipset drivers from AMD. We are using the “Balanced” power profile in Windows Settings. Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling is ENABLED in Windows. VBS is DISABLED and Game Mode is ENABLED.
All game benchmarks were run fresh on new drivers for this review, GeForce 552.22 and Adrenalin 24.4.1. The Radeon RX 7900 GRE is a factory overclocked card from PowerColor. The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE has a factory overclock of 2013MHz for the game clock and 2366MHz for the boost clock. This is a 7% boost to the game clock from the reference specs and a 5% boost to the boost clock compared to the reference spec.

I haven't tried to manually overclock the GPU on my laptop which reportedly uses the same die as the non-super 4070 but using its max boost mode shows it hitting ~2560 MHz and some rare peaks in the 2800s. I did overclock the memory slightly but nothing to write home about. In the end, though, the AD104 is a beast at 1440p and even more so when using DLSS, and from looking at this review of the SUPER version it gets just a bit better at it as well.
It's really impressive that this card meets or beats the RTX3080 and gets really close to the RTX3090 in several games.
Yep, the refinement with the ADA GPUs, especially in the mid-high tiers is really impressive.
Remember when a 1070 was SUPPOSED to be faster than a 980? How far we have fallen.
IIRC the GTX 1070 IS faster than the GTX 980, not by much, but still.
That's my point for a short while there the x79 series was faster/better than the previous gens x80.
