Conclusion
This is the third and last review in a queue that featured MSI motherboard refreshes with socket AM4 support. In each case, we saw that MSI had improved on the capabilities and functionality about as far as one can go given the limitations of the CPU. This review examined the PRO B550M-P motherboard. Released in April 2026, this MATX board is about as basic as you can find; there are no frills (and no VRM heatsinks) and no wifi, but it still supports socket AM4, DDR4 memory, PCIe Gen4x16, and M.2 Gen4. The board also adds a second M.2 Gen3 slot (versus earlier models). The retail price range of $75 to $89 makes this a very attractive platform for a basic desktop PC.
Installation and Use
There were no issues encountered in the use of this motherboard. Component assembly was as expected. The board is a little short on 4-pin fan headers if you use an AIO cooler, but we managed by adding a line from the PSU directly. There was plenty of space on this board, despite its smaller size. The only issue that does make a real difference is the second M.2 slot. This is positioned right below the GPU. Given that Gen3 NVME tends to be thin and not use big heatsinks, our ADATA SX8100NP fit just fine. Temperatures could be an issue, though. We simply could not use our primary M.2 drive in the second slot for testing purposes, because it does have a giant heatsink. So with a dedicated GPU, that was a no-go. As we stated earlier, the GPU also covers the top PCIex1 slot, making that unusable.
First boot, flashing the BIOS, and loading Windows 11 were no issue. The BIOS is a bit retro in appearance, but finding items and the one- click feature works just fine. Navigation and selection were crisp and quick. We had no issues running any benchmarks. Hats off to MSI….no VRM heatsinks and the board ran CinebenchR23 with no heat-related issues.
Final Points
In this short series from MSI, we have seen that the socket AM4 and its associated components are still a pretty good option, even 5 years out from the original release. MSI has made some quality boards that perform well, offer choice in a broad range of uses, and don’t break the bank. If you browse the MSI-USA store on the right day, you can get a nice motherboard for a very low price. The PRO B550M-P is the identical board we previously reviewed minus the WiFi module. It is a very capable MATX motherboard that performed without a hitch. The price makes you look twice: under $90. (Currently offered at $75) If you need a nice desktop that can recycle older components you may have on a shelf, the MSI PRO B550M-P motherboard is a contender.
