Gaming Performance (Al-Do)
In our game performance testing, we are utilizing an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 FE video card. We are running each game at 1080p, Native Resolution, and we are using mostly the highest game settings. However, in Clair Obscur, we have lowered the game settings. We are using manual in-game run-throughs for each game and reporting the average FPS and 1% Lows. It is important to note the 1% Lows in many instances, especially in those where the AVG is close; the 1% Lows may not be. All games are running the latest versions. All graphs are organized from fastest to slowest by AVG.
Alan Wake 2
Starting our game testing in Alan Wake 2, we are running at 1080p and the highest game settings. The AMD Ryzen 9 9700X is certainly the fastest CPU here, and that is reflected in both the average framerate and the 1% Lows. The Ryzen 7 9700X is….wait for it…..5% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X. 😐 Yeah, so far, not getting off to a good start here, escaping the claim of just “Zen 5%” here, when we are literally starting off with just an exact 5% difference. The 1% Lows of the Ryzen 7 9700X are just 3% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X. The Ryzen 7 9700X is 7% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700, which is better. Considering both CPUs have the same 65W TDP, this means that, watt-for-watt, the Ryzen 7 9700X is faster. The Ryzen 7 7700X is 2% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700, but consumes more power.
Battlefield 6
When the Ryzen 7 9700X was launched, Battlefield 6 was not out yet, but now we can test this game across the CPUs. Well, it isn’t that exciting, really. The AMD Ryzen 7 9700X actually came in under 2 FPS compared to the performance of the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X. These results are within the margin of error, but technically, if we do the percentages, the Ryzen 7 9700X is 1% behind the Ryzen 7 7700X. Practically, both CPUs are coming in at the same gaming performance. However, interestingly, the Ryzen 7 9700X does have 2% faster 1% Lows. The Ryzen 7 9700X is only 2% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. The 1% Lows though, are 5% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is another game that wasn’t out when the AMD Ryzen 9 9700X launched, so we can now test the performance in this game between the CPUs. Unfortunately, it’s much like Battlefield 6; even at a lower “High” in-game quality setting, the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X is only 3% faster than the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X on the average framerate. HOWEVER, check out the 1% Lows; there actually is a difference here, with the Ryzen 7 9700X being 8% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X! That matters! The Ryzen 7 9700X is 4% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. The Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 7700 are practically the same in performance.
Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert also was not out when the Ryzen 7 9700X was launched, so this is all new information. In this game, the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X is only 4% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X in average performance. HOWEVER, the 1% Lows are 5% faster. The Ryzen 7 9700X is 6% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. The Ryzen 7 7700X is just a hair faster than the Ryzen 7 7700 for this game.
Cyberpunk 2077
Oof, in Cyberpunk 2077, there just isn’t much of an average performance difference between all three CPUs here, though there is a slight difference in 1% Lows between the 7700X/9700X and 7700. The Ryzen 7 9700X is only 1% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X, and the 1% Low performance is exactly the same. The Ryzen 7 9700X is 3% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700, and the 1% Lows are 5% faster. The Ryzen 7 7700X is 2% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Doom: The Dark Ages was also not out when the Ryzen 7 9700X was originally tested, so this is a look at how it performs in this game now across the CPUs. The AMD Ryzen 7 9700X actually shows a bit of a performance uplift in performance over the Ryzen 7 7700X. The Ryzen 7 9700X is 7% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X in average framerate, which is on the high side so far for a performance uplift in our testing. The 1% Lows are 3% faster. The Ryzen 7 9700X is 8% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700 as well. The Ryzen 7 7700X is 1% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700.
