Conclusion

The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D was launched in March of 2025, with a 12-Core/24-Thread configuration based on AMD’s latest Zen 5 architecture on the AM5 platform. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D sits toward the bottom of the Ryzen 9 9000 stack, which provides a significant boost to the L3 Cache size using AMD’s 2nd Generation 3D V-Cache. With an extra 128MB of L3 cache on board, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D offers a gaming-oriented solution as an upgrade over the Ryzen 9 9900X in the 12-Core space. This provides both a creative content performance boost over the Ryzen 7 8-Core X3D CPU, but at the same time retaining the excellent gaming performance of the X3D CPUs.

The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a 12-Core/24-Thread CPU with a 5.5GHz max boost clock and a total of 140MB cache at a 120W TDP or 200W PPT. Technically, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has a slightly lower max boost clock at 5.5GHz, compared to the Ryzen 9 9900X at 5.6GHz. However, the major difference of increasing the L3 cache size from 76MB on the Ryzen 9 9900X to 128MB on the Ryzen 9 9900X is what makes it special and makes it excel in gaming. At this L3 Cache size, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D matches the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in terms of L3 cache size, but not total size. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D has more cores (16-Core/32-Thread) and therefore a total cache size of 144MB.

The Ryzen 9 9900X3D also offers a slight upgrade over the Ryzen 9 7900X3D in terms of an upgrade in architecture from Zen 4 to Zen 5. Otherwise, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D did have a bigger 5.6GHz max boost, but with the 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache the Ryzen 9 9900X3D will be able to hold its frequency higher and longer than the predecessor. Price-wise, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has an MSRP of $599, which is the same as the Ryzen 9 7900X3D launched at as well, so there was no price increase over the generations. Right now, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D can be had between $510-$550, making it cheaper than the launch price right now.

Performance Summary

Starting with the synthetic benchmarks, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D was generally slightly slower than the Ryzen 9 9900X in multi-core and single-thread performance overall. There was one rendering instance where the Ryzen 9 9900X3D was a bit faster than the Ryzen 9 9900X, but these moments were few and far between. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D performs like a 12-Core CPU, with the 16-core outpacing it for pure multi-core, multi-tasking, or content creation applications.

Where the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D shines is gaming. Gaming doesn’t need more cores, just a lot of cache, and the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has it. We experienced some dramatic improvements in average FPS and 1% Low with the Ryzen 9 9900X3D compared to the Ryzen 9 9900X. It does depend on the game; some games saw higher differences than others. It also depends on the area in the game; in more open-world environments, the difference is lessened, but in more densely populated areas, the difference can be huge, absolutely huge.

In Alan Wake 2, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D was very impressive in the 1% Low performance, being 31% faster than the Ryzen 9 9900X. The average FPS difference was about 12% faster than the Ryzen 9 9900X. In Battlefield 6, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D was 7% faster in the average FPS and 11% faster in the 1% Lows. In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, though, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D was 19% faster than the Ryzen 9 9900X in average FPS and 23% faster in 1% Lows. Crimson Desert gained a lot of performance with the Ryzen 9 9900X3D, 18% faster with the average FPS and 27% faster with the 1% Lows. Cyberpunk showed a very large performance difference, 22% faster in average FPS and 19% faster in 1% Lows. Hogwarts Legacy showed a mind-numbing difference with 32% faster performance in average FPS and 32% faster in 1% Lows as well, just wow. Horizon Forbidden West was 16% faster in average FPS and 11% faster in the 1% Lows. Resident Evil Requiem was 21% faster in average FPS and 20% faster in 1% Lows.

Basically, the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X was the slowest CPU in gaming here, with some pretty large deficits in performance even compared to the Ryzen 9 9950X. However, the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D fixes that and puts the performance at the top of the charts. The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D matches the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in gaming performance. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D was, in some cases, up to 5% faster than the Ryzen 9 9900X3D, but there weren’t many instances of that. For the most part, they are within 1-2% of each other. This means the Ryzen 9 9900X3D can hang with the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in performance, but uses less power while gaming! If you are power constrained, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D might be a great compromise for the best gaming performance and better content creation performance compared to an 8-Core CPU.

Final Points

When all is said and done, you really can tell the Ryzen 9 9900X3D is more of a gamer-focused CPU, because it dominates in gaming. However, it does fall behind even the Ryzen 9 9900X at times in creative applications when it comes to multi-core or even single-thread performance. That said, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a definitive upgrade over an 8-Core CPU, like the Ryzen 7 9700X or Ryzen 7 9800X3D, in terms of creative application performance. It will allow you to run better multitasking, such as streaming and other applications, while you are also gaming at the same time with more cores and threads over those CPUs. At the same time, it will not compromise on gaming performance at all, and it sits right up there with the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in gaming performance.

For games themselves, cores don’t matter as much, and 12-Core/24-Thread is fine for gaming. In this regard, the added AMD 3D V-Cache becomes the deciding factor for gameplay performance improvement, and our results bear that out. In gaming, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D is no slouch and performs at the top of X3D performance in the Ryzen 9 lineup, with less power utilization compared to the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. If you don’t need a 16-Core CPU, and 12 cores will suffice, and gaming is a higher focus than creative content rendering, then the Ryzen 9 9900X3D may be the better option for you, since it is more efficient and less money. It’s the better value.

If you need the extra cores, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is always there for you. On the flip side, if gaming is all you want, period, and creative content takes a backseat, and you don’t stream, then the Ryzen 9 9800X3D is perfect for you. At the end of the day, AMD has a CPU for every type of scenario and use case, and the Ryzen 9 9900X3D certainly fits in with a purpose to fulfill. You cannot deny the awesome improvements in gaming performance that AMD’s 3D V-Cache makes: improved 1% Lows, improved averages, and improved gameplay consistency.

SUMMARY

The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a great hybrid CPU, allowing the very best gaming performance, making it a gaming-focused CPU, but can also cut it with creative content application performance. Being a 12-Core/24-Thread CPU, it can crunch through applications and multi-tasking, much better than an 8-Core CPU, and yet still deliver top-tier gaming performance. It provides this at a lower cost than the 16-Core CPUs, and may just be the best middle-ground of gaming performance and creative content applications at this price point.
