Conclusion

The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D is AMD’s fastest gaming CPU, and also AMD’s fastest content creation CPU as well. With a 16-Core/32-Thread configuration, AMD has packaged 128MB of its 3D V-Cache X3D Technology on board to boost gaming performance. The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D was launched in March 2025 for $699 MSRP. It does have the highest TDP and PPT up to 200W, but also has the highest possible turbo clock up to 5.7GHz.

On the other hand, the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D cuts all that down to a 12-Core/24-Thread CPU. It still, though, has the exact same 128MB of 3D V-Cache X3D Technology on board to boost gaming performance. It was also launched in March 2025 but at a $599 MSRP. It has a lower PPT of 162W, but also a lower turbo clock of up to 5.5GHz. Both CPUs use AMD’s newer 2nd Generation 3D V-Cache technology on the AMD Zen 5 Architecture CPUs.

Performance Summary

The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D CPUs are very innovative. One must also consider the fact that the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D has its CCDs divided up into 8-Core CCDs, while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D is split up into two 6-Core CCDs. In essence, this means that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D has 3D V-Cache available to 8 Cores at a time, while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has its 3D V-Cache spread across just 6-Cores at a time. One could argue that with modern gaming, having at least 8-Cores dedicated to the game is preferred for the newest and upcoming multi-threaded gaming titles.

In our performance testing of games, however, we didn’t experience this slowing down performance or changing performance in games drastically between the CPUs. Instead, it seemed to be rather the frequency the CPUs could boost to, determining the gaming performance we experienced. Most of the time, the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D performed exactly the same, if not within margins of error of each other in these games.

We saw, at most, up to a 5% difference in the average performance between the CPUs in games. Typically, it was the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D that was ahead, but in most of the games, it was just a 1% performance difference in reality. The highest advantages were experienced in the 1% Low performance. In this, the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D could run up to 7% faster than the Ryzen 9 9900X3D, but those cases were rarer than the norm. The norm was about a 1- 5% difference in the 1% Lows.

Final Points

When it comes down to it, both the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D are equally as good for gaming. The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a great option if you need to save money, but still want a little more performance for content creation workloads compared to the 8-Core X3D CPUs. You can rest assured that the Ryzen 9 9900X3D won’t be any slower in gaming compared to the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. You will still be getting the same GAMING performance.

When it comes to multi-threaded apps, rendering, video transcoding, and content creation, however, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is going to offer a substantial upgrade in performance. Therefore, it just depends on what you need the CPU to do for you, what your goals are, and, of course, your wallet. If you need to save money, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D is not a bad deal, and you won’t be compromising gaming performance. If you just want the best, no arguments, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is the way to go.
