Final Points & Summary

Overall, when you watch the entire keynote you will notice that the theme this year is mobile oriented.  It’s about empowering mobile computing.  As Intel stated, wherever you take your mobile device is your new office in the world we live today.  It’s about empowering every type of computer user from office applications, to creators or demanding AI in a mobile environment.

Many of the CPU announcements and product showcases in this keynote were of new mobile designs and platforms.  Basically, giving mobile users incredible power in their lap and on the go.  This is fine, but I know that most of us reading this editorial here today are mostly interested in what Intel can provide for gamers and the enthusiast desktop platform.  Unfortunately, we did not get anything about the next generation desktop PC CPUs.  However, we did get a couple of nuggets geared for gamers that are of interest.

i9 9900KS CPU

The new i9 9900KS CPU is of great interest for gamers and content creators alike.  While more cores are important for gaming, GHz still rules the roost in terms of gaming performance.  Once you reach a certain level of cores/threads like 8 core/16 thread then we have kind of reached a bit of a wall where more just doesn’t matter for games.  Most games will not utilize beyond 8 cores / 16 threads yet.

The important aspect of performance beyond that is IPC and GHz.  Games understand GHz very well.  The more you can give them, the better they run with high-end GPUs.  AMD is making waves in IPC, and Intel is making waves in pure GHz.  Having an 8 core / 16 thread CPU that can reach 5GHz on all cores at once is a positive thing for gaming performance.  If it can pull off Intel’s claim, it certainly will be a powerful gaming CPU.

With 8 cores / 16 threads it also makes a good content creation platform for YouTubers/Twitchers and streamers.  It’s honestly a very exciting and most interesting CPU that we can’t wait to get our hands on and test.  Important factors to this CPU are going to be TDP, how much power it really demands, pricing and heat generation.  If these are all at acceptable levels, it is going to give AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series some competition.

Intel Performance Maximizer

Finally, Intel’s overclocking program sounds exciting.  It will take the guess work out of overclocking and having to figure out every nuance of your system and the fine details.  The software will determine what your specific CPU is capable of per-core and give you the best overclock your CPU can muster.  We can’t wait to see how well this works.  It should allow everyone to get the most out of their CPUs very easily, maximizing the value for the money you spent on them.

While this keynote wasn’t as zestful as AMD’s with its new announcements, there are more things on the horizon Intel has in store and we can’t wait hear about the next generation on desktop.
