Gameplay Performance 4K
We are going to now look at 4K game performance on the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC. We are comparing it with a GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition to see how much of an improvement in performance the GIGABYTE RTX 3090 provides in games. We are also including the Radeon RX 6800 XT as a similar data point. Resizable BAR is enabled for all video cards below. We will test Ray Tracing and DLSS on a separate page later in the review.
Cyberpunk 2077
Trying to play Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with “Ultra” settings is a trying experience, even on the fastest video cards. Therefore we also included DLSS in this performance testing to see how that can provide a playable experience on the GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 here. So, first let’s look at the No DLSS performance. You can see the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC is at 44FPS average, this is 13% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 performance. However, it’s still far from actually being playable. Overclocking the video card improves performance by 7%. This helps bring it up to 47FPS but is still not really enjoyable at this performance level.
However, once we enable Quality DLSS this changes. When we enable the highest quality form of DLSS we gain 56% performance on the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC. Performance is now at a very playable 68FPS without even having to overclock. Though when we do overclock DLSS performance is now at a really smooth 72FPS, an increase of 55% without it. This DLSS performance is also 12% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 FE and overclocked the 3090 is 19% faster. This is performance the Radeon RX 6800 XT just can’t match since it has nothing to match DLSS technology.
Dirt 5
In Dirt 4 at 4K the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC offers a very playable gameplay experience at 99FPS. That’s a 14% improvement over the GeForce RTX 3080 FE. Overclocking it improves performance by 7%. Overclocked it’s 22% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 FE.
Horizon Zero Dawn
In Horizon Zero Dawn at 4K the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC provides a great experience at 92FPS. It’s 21% faster than the Radeon RX 6800 XT and 12% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 FE. Overclocking it improves performance by 7%.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
You can see now how the scaling is much better at 4K compared to 1440p. We are now GPU bound very much at 4K. The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT struggles quite a bit here, the game is barely enjoyable. However, with the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC the game is very enjoyable at 44-45FPS average. Overclocking helps even more and improves by 7%. This is 10% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 FE and with overclocking it’s 17% faster. The overclocked 3090 is 35% faster than the Radeon RX 6800 XT.
Watch Dogs Legion
Watch Dogs Legion can be very demanding at 4K, but the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC provides a playable experience averaging over 60FPS. Overclocking it improves performance by 8%. It is 9% faster than the RTX 3080 and overclocked it’s 17% faster.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is another game that is extremely demanding at 4K. The GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC is the only video card to provide over 60FPS average performance at 4K in this game. It beats the RTX 3080 by 11%. Overclocking the RTX 3090 improves performance by 7%.
Assassins Creed Valhalla
This game is still a bit of an anomaly for the Radeon RX 6800 XT, it’s on par with the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC here. However, overclocking the RTX 3090 improves performance and edges it out. At 64 or 66FPS the GIGABYTE RTX 3090 GAMING OC offers a very playable gameplay experience in this game at 4K.
Wolfenstein Youngblood
Once again we find this game performs very well, the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC is 11% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 FE. Overclocking it improves performance by 5%.
