Test Setup

In this review, one of the video cards was tested on a different review test system, but still represents its full performance and is relevant to the discussion and performance comparisons. The differences are shown below.

NVIDIA GPU Test Configuration

The motherboard BIOS settings are all largely at their default or automatic values. However, the Resizable Bar and DOCP modes are enabled. The system was also verified as having its PCI-Express expansion slots in PCIe Gen 4.0 mode.

As this setup differs from the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, the results here are self-contained. We only had an RTX 3080 Ti with a factory overclock available for comparison. Other than switching the GPU, the test variables are all the same unless indicated otherwise.

To be clear, the RTX 3090 is positioned as a bit of a prosumer/ultra-high end gaming card. As a result, it does have some uses and benefits outside of gaming. However, in this case, we are concentrating on gaming performance.

AMD GPU Test Configuration

Note: The AMD Radeon 6900XT system was a different configuration and the numbers provided by Brent and the differences in the configuration are noted here for transparency. Certainly, this accounts for some of the leads you may see at 1440P, but doesn’t make much of a difference at 3840×2160. The in-game settings were all the same, but the results were pulled from one of Brent’s articles to give us more points of comparison.
