Gameplay Performance
We are going to focus on 4K gameplay performance with the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC video card. We will include DLSS and FSR performance on the same graph in the games that are supported. We will use DLSS on NVIDIA GPUs and FSR on AMD GPUs. Ray Tracing performance will be shown on a separate page. For video card comparisons we are using an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT video card.
F1 2022
F1 2022 was released on June 28th, 2022 on the PC and uses Codemasters Ego engine. The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, AMD FidelityFX, and FSR. We are going to run the game with the highest quality settings of “Ultra High” and TAA+FidelityFX. We will enable DLSS and FSR as needed at the Quality setting for both. We will utilize the built-in benchmark in the Imola track, in dry conditions with a far chasing cam.
In the brand new game F1 2022, we are running the game at 4K with all the graphics settings maxed out, except Ray Tracing. The MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC video card is more than able to provide a playable experience exceeding 100FPS average in this game, providing very smooth gameplay. Overclocking the video card improves performance by 5% and brings it to 120FPS average. In this particular game, the Radeon RX 6900 XT is very competitive and is 6% faster than the MSI RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS, but both still provide a playable experience. Only overclocked does the MSI RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS match the Radeon RX 6900 XT in performance in this game.
However, we can benefit from DLSS and FSR in this game as well. Enabling DLSS increases performance by 30% taking it to nearly 150FPS. Overclocked, we do exceed 150FPS with DLSS. FSR also improves performance on the Radeon RX 6900 XT taking it to 160FPS.
Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine. The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS and FSR. We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing. We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute. For our benchmark, we are using a custom manual run-through at the end of the game hopping between rooftops, as well as free-roaming on the ground city level, as well as a forested area, in the daylight.
In Dying Light 2 we are running the game at 4K with the highest in-game settings except Ray Tracing. This game is very demanding, and at 4K the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC barely provides a playable experience at 4K. For the most part, it’s playable at 54FPS on average, but there are some minimums that could be concerning. It seems to be on par with the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT in performance, both are neck-and-neck. Overclocking the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC really helps performance, by 6%. It brings it closer to 60FPS, and the gameplay is better.
Overall though, what helps the most is DLSS and or FSR. DLSS on the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS improves performance by 47% and brings performance up to 80FPS. At 80FPS the game is super smooth. Overclocked brings performance even higher, and the Radeon RX 6900 XT is very competitive performance-wise with FSR. However, DLSS does look better than FSR in this game.
Forza Horizon 5
Forza Horizon 5 was released on PC in November of 2021 and it uses the ForzaTech game engine. For our evaluation, we raise the in-game graphic settings beyond the “Extreme” preset to the maximum game settings. In addition to the “Extreme” preset we raise SSAO Quality to Ultra, Reflection Quality to Extreme, SSR Quality to Ultra. We also disable MSAA and use FXAA. We test AMD FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS) performance from the Resolution Scaling option. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing.
In Forza Horizon 5 we are running the game at 4K with the highest custom in-game settings maxed out and TAA. The MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC does allow a very playable experience at 4K at 71FPS. Overclocking the video card improves performance by 6%. Overall, it is the Radeon RX 6900 XT that is slightly faster in this game, compared to the MSI RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS it is 10% faster. That said, both still offer the same gameplay experience.
Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 was released in October of 2021 and uses the Dunia Engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and turned on. We utilize the “Ultra” graphics preset which sets all options to the highest game settings. This game supports FSR upscaling.
We have no trouble at all running Far Cry 6 at 4K with HD Textures enabled plus the highest in-game settings. With ample VRAM, both video cards can churn this game just fine at 4K with HD Textures. The MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC is playable over 80FPS and overclocking it brings performance up 5%. The Radeon RX 6900 XT is slightly faster until the MSI RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS is overclocked. FSR also improves performance linearly across the board on all the video cards. It brings them all very close to around 110FPS.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December of 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.52 and perform a long manual run-through driving in the game’s open world. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings, mainly “Ultra”. This game supports DLSS and FSR.
In Cyberpunk 2077, this game continues to be very demanding at 4K. At the “Ultra” setting no video card is playable, even if the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC is technically faster. It is not until we utilize DLSS and or FSR that the game is capable to at least be somewhat usable at 4K. That said, the Overclocked MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC with DLSS performed the best with the highest minimum framerates.
Watch Dogs Legion
Watch Dogs Legion was released on the PC in October of 2020 and uses the Disrupt game engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and enabled for testing. We use the built-in graphics preset of “Ultra” for testing. This game supports DLSS upscaling.
In Watch Dogs Legion both video cards are very playable at 4K with the highest settings, sans Ray Tracing. The MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS 3X 12G OC is playable at 61FPS and overclocked it improves performance by 5%. The Radeon RX 6900 XT is very competitive and keeps pace with the Overclocked MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS. The GeForce RTX video card has the advantage of being able to utilize DLSS in this game. With DLSS the MSI RTX 3080 Ti VENTUS improves performance by 38% and produces over 80FPS of gameplay performance. In this comparison, it blows the doors off of the Radeon RX 6900 XT at 4K.
