Power and Temp

To test the power and temperature we perform a manual run-through in Cyberpunk 2077 at “Ultra” settings for real-world in-game data.  We use GPU-Z sensor data to record the results.  We report on the GPU-Z sensor data for “Board Power” and “GPU Chip Power” when available for our Wattage data.  For temperature data, we report the GPU (Edge Temp of the GPU or Package Temp) as well as Hot Spot (Junction Temperature) when available for our temperature data.

Power

Power graph on MSI GeForce RTX 4080 16GB GAMING X TRIO

The MSI GeForce RTX 4080 16GB GAMING X TRIO video card is sitting right at the NVIDIA TGP of 320W board power. At this power level, it is the most efficient video card on this graph, pulling less power than the RTX 3080 Ti, RTX 3090, and RTX 3090 Ti. It is faster than the RTX 3090 Ti but uses 29% less power while being faster. When we overclocked the video card the board power rose 11%, which was about equal to the performance advantage we experienced, so it was a close 1:1 ratio. At this power level, it is now on par with the RTX 3080 Ti power-wise. This is a power-efficient video card that seems to follow its performance ratio to power efficiency pretty linearly.

Temperature

Temperature graph on MSI GeForce RTX 4080 16GB GAMING X TRIO

The MSI GeForce RTX 4080 16GB GAMING X TRIO’s TRI FROZR 3 thermal solution is working very well on this video card. It reached only 68.7c on the GPU temp at default settings and a Hot Spot of 80.5c. These temperatures are cooler than every video card on this graph, including the 3090 and 3090 Ti FE cards with beefed-up coolers. What was also impressive was that the fans were only at 38% rotational speed at these temps, so the noise profile is very low, you cannot hear them. When we overclocked the video card we set the fans to 100%, and the temperatures were kept very cool at 57c, so thermals are not a problem when overclocking.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 16GB GAMING X TRIO, which performed beyond the previous generation video cards. It has a high factory overclock and has overclocking headroom which resulted in a good overclock with decent performance uplift. It has a robust build, and pleasing aesthetic, with excellent thermals, and cooling in a quiet profile. It does take up a lot of space, beware of size. Overall it is a great gaming video card that demands a price point higher-than-normal we are used to for a video card in this range.
