God of War Ragnarök has managed to sell 5.1 million copies since its debut week, making it the fastest-selling first-party launch game in PlayStation history and setting a new record for the long-running franchise, according to a new celebratory tweet from the official PlayStation account.

The first God of War (2018), in comparison, launched with similar accolades, selling over 3.1 million units in three days, making it the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive and prompting Santa Monica Studio to release the following statement:

I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.

Santa Monica Studio hasn’t provided a similar statement yet for God of War Ragnarök but has thanked its fans and hope that they enjoy the game, which is now available for both PS4 and PS5 consoles, with the latter offering benefits such as improved visuals and loading times.

Eric Williams, who directed the game, has strongly suggested that God of War Ragnarök will not be receiving any sort of expansion, but updates such as a Photo Mode (and possibly New Game+) are on the way.
