System Benchmarks

Sandra Dhrystone

MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 SiSoft Sandra CPU Dhrystone Test.

In the CPU test, we can see MSI’s default settings increase performance by a noticeable amount compared to the Intel defaults. Even so, the DDR5-based ASUS ROG Z690 Extreme is even faster here, but that is just for comparison and doesn’t reflect the merits of the motherboard, although not by a lot. For whatever reason, the ASUS ROG Z690 APEX is oddly slow here.

Sandra Whetstone

In the Sandra Whetstone test, we again see MSI’s defaults increase performance over Intel’s defaults, albeit only slightly. We see both ASUS DDR5 boards overtake the MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk DDR4 WiFi with the ASUS ROG Z690 APEX doing so by a relatively wide margin.

POV-Ray v3.7

MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 POV-Ray Test.

In this test, virtually all of the test configurations perform virtually the same. The difference is roughly within a margin of error.

V-Ray

MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 V-Ray Test.

In this test, we see similar performance across the test systems. However, the DDR5 systems are slightly faster once again. Oddly, the MSI defaults are slower than the Intel defaults which is the first time we’ve seen that so far.

Cinebench R23 – Single Thread

MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 Cinebench R23 Single-Core Test.

In this test we see the Intel defaults pull ahead of the MSI defaults once again. Additionally, we see mixed results from the DDR5 test systems with one coming in ahead of the MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk DDR4 WiFi and the other behind it.

Cinebench R23 – Multithread

MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 Cinebench R23 CPU Multi-Core Test.

In the Cinebench R23 multicore test, we see an identical delta between the systems we saw in the single-threaded version of the test.

SUMMARY

Feature-wise, the MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WiFi DDR4 is comparable to other similar motherboards on the market. Its layout is nearly flawless with only one or two minor things to complain about. When it comes to stability, I never had a single lockup, crash, BSOD, or issue with performance in benchmarks. Although it does not quite compete with more expensive DDR5 offerings in some tests. The MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WiFi DDR4 simply worked. Lastly, at $239.99 (at the time of this writing) it's an incredible value in a landscape of increasingly expensive offerings.
