Test Setup

The Ryzen 5 7600 and Ryzen 5 7600X are tested on the AMD X670E AM5 platform shown above in the table. We used the latest BIOS at the time of testing which was 1415. This is based on AGESA 1.0.0.7a. We are using the motherboard’s current default BIOS settings. We have Resizable BAR ENABLED.
The CPUs are cooled by an MSI MEG CORELIQUID S360 AIO cooler. We used 32GB of G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo DDR5 F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5N (32GB 6000MHz @ 30-38-38-96) memory with EXPO Profile 1 enabled.
An NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition video card with driver GeForce 536.67 was common on both CPUs.
We are using a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro with the latest Windows Updates, including the 22H2 Fall 2022 update. We also have the latest chipset drivers installed which is 5.05.16.529. We are using the BALANCED power profile in Windows Settings. Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling is ENABLED in Windows. Virtual Based Security (VBS) is DISABLED and Game Mode is ENABLED.
AMD Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO)
In our testing today we have also enabled PBO in the BIOS on the Ryzen 9 7900. For this we went into the BIOS and simply enabled PBO at the default settings, no further tweaking was done. We are therefore using the default PBO settings on this motherboard once you enable PBO. The graphs show “PBO ENABLED” which indicates the performance with PBO Enabled in the BIOS.

Join Discussion →Hey this was an interesting article to read, and it had me asking myself about my 5900x CPU.
How would my 5900x CPU compare in gaming workloads to the 7600x CPU. Would I have the same throttle point at 4k and sometimes at 1440p gaming? Would the newer generation with it's overall higher single thread be able to feed a modern GPU more efficiently than my 5900x?
Clearly the raw speed isn't making a big difference for gaming at all at the higher resolutions. Seems like if you're doing CPU based rendering it's clear more threads is better. But for gaming in specific I wonder at the differences.
I guess if you guys end up with SO MUCH free time to do a retrospective on CPU performance that would be awesome.
Only issue really here is the PITA it will be to swap platforms due to difference sockets.
Huh... remember back in the... was it 486 or early Pentium days when Citrix would make socket adapters. Sigh... the good ole days... Around the same time that Nvidia made motherboards for AMD CPU's.
