Bethesda Game Studios has announced that AMD FSR 3 is coming to Starfield as part of a new Steam beta update sometime next week. AMD FSR 3 is a temporal data-based upscaling technology that includes frame generation to improve frame rates and visual quality. Starfield was already patched to add NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 frame generation technology a few months back but while that feature requires having a GeForce RTX graphics card, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 is open-source and can be used on any modern GPU.

Bethesda has said that players can get early access to FSR 3 next week via the game’s Steam Beta channel and that it plans to roll out a patch to all PC players later this month. In the meantime, VideoCardz reminds us that owners of AMD graphics cards can already access frame generation through AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames technology which combines HYPR-RX and Radeon Super Resolution to provide the feature without FSR 3. However, this method can be considerably less effective than FSR 3 due to its approach of upscaling the entire frame image.

Players are also reminded that, if desired to have natively rendered frames produced, the frame generation feature in FSR 3 can be turned off and its upscaling technology may be left on separately for improved FPS. However, that does essentially reduce FSR support to FSR 2.

Per AMD:

“Frame generation in FSR 3 is optional – it can be disabled if only upscaling is desired. This will effectively revert behavior to be equivalent to FSR 2.”

Starfield was officially released for PC and Xbox X|S consoles on September 6, 2023. While the PC version was heavily criticized for its AMD-optimized launch state Bethesda Game Studios has been hard at work in providing support and features for both AMD and NVIDIA graphics card owners since then. Bethesda has yet to add Intel XeSS to the game but has said that it is working on it. Bethesda announced this and more would be arriving in 2024, on its Reddit page back in December, where it had also announced the FSR 3 was on its way.

Per Bethesda:

“Hey everyone, first, we read all the feedback here and greatly appreciate it and all the time and thought you put into the game. This small update was to mostly address the “pet-asteroid” so many asked about following our last larger update, and we wanted to get that out before the holiday.

We’ve been hard at work on many of the issues you’ve posted, and expect an update early next year that will include a large number of “in-progress” quest fixes as well as FSR3 and XeSS. Though we fixed several quest issues from occurring, in-progress quest fixes are much harder to fix and we’ve built a new system to correct those without you having to roll back your save.

We’re also hard at work on many of new features you asked for, from city maps, to mod support, to all new ways of traveling (stay tuned!). These will be rolling out with a regular cadence of fixes and updates we expect to have roughly every six weeks. If something can be done in a smaller hotfix in between (like the asteroid), and we feel it’s safe, we’ll get one of those out as well. Safe is the key here. We do take a lot of time to test even the smallest change in a game this large and dynamic.

Hope this information helps. If there are items you want more info on, or issues to make us aware of, keep posting here or our official Discord. Thanks again for all your support of us and the game.”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
