Introduction
The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D are AMD’s top-tier Ryzen 9 CPUs with 3D V-Cache, designed for the ultimate gaming experience on the PC. These two X3D CPUs in AMD’s Ryzen 9 9000 CPU lineup offer more cores and that lovely extra L3 Cache that helps improve the gaming experience.
In today’s head-to-head comparison review, we will put the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D versus Ryzen 9 9950X3D in 12 games, with both Average FPS and 1% Lows benchmarked, with all new fresh data gathered and tested in the fall of 2026. We will include games that were not yet out when the Ryzen 9 9950X3D was originally reviewed at launch. In addition, we’ll have a few synthetic benchmarks as well to just show the difference in performance between the 12-Core and 16-Core CPU in Multi-Core and Single-Core workloads.
Ryzen 9 9900X3D vs Ryzen 9 9950X3D
The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D is AMD’s flagship CPU, with the most cores, the highest clock speeds, and the most total Cache. The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D was launched in March of 2025 with an MSRP of $699. The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D is a 16-Core/32-Thread CPU. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D followed the initial launch of the Zen 5 architecture AMD Ryzen 9 9000 CPUs on the AM5 platform in August of 2024.
The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D improved upon the Ryzen 9 9950X by incorporating AMD’s 2nd Generation 3D V-Cache technology. This boosted the L3 Cache size up to 128MB from 64MB, and the total cache size is 144MB. Otherwise, the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D runs at the same turbo clock speed of 5.7GHz, same as the Ryzen 9 9950X. The TDPs are the same as well, at 170W TDP.
The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is AMD’s decked-out 12-Core CPU offering. The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D also launched at the same time as the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in around March of 2025 with an MSRP of $599. The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a 12-Core/24-Thread CPU. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D improves upon the Ryzen 9 9900X by also incorporating AMD’s 2nd Generation 3D V-Cache technology. This boosts the L3 Cache size up to 128MB from 64MB, and the total cache size is 140MB.
Since the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has 6-Cores in each CCD, this means ultimately the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has its 3D V-Cache on just 6-Cores, versus the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which has its 3D V-Cache across 8-Cores. The Ryzen 9 9900X3d runs at a boost clock of 5.5GHz, which is down slightly from the Ryzen 9 9900X at 5.6GHz. The TDP is the same on both the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X at 120W.
| AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D | AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D | |
|---|---|---|
| CPU Family | AMD Ryzen 9000 Series (Granite Ridge) | AMD Ryzen 9000 Series (Granite Ridge) |
| Cores | 16 | 12 |
| Threads | 32 | 24 |
| L3 Cache | 128 MB | 128 MB |
| Total Cache | 144 | 140 |
| Base Clock | 4.3 GHz | 4.4 GHz |
| Boost Clock | 5.7 GHz | 5.5 GHz |
| TDP | 170 W | 120 W |
| MSRP | $ 699 | $ 599 |
Directly comparing the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D shapes up like this. The big difference is going to be the core configuration. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D has 16-Cores/32-Threads while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has 12-Cores/24-Threads. However, because both CPUs use two CCDs to divide the cores, this means the Ryzen 9 9950X3D has 8-Core CCDs, while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has 6-Core CCDs.
In terms of 3D V-Cache however, both CPUs have the exact same amount of Cache at 128MB, and both are of the newer 2nd Generation variety. The clock speeds also differ, with the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D being clocked at up to 5.7GHz, while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D can boost up to 5.5GHz. The TDP and PPT are also going to play a role; the Ryzen 9 9950X3D can shoot to the moon at a 200W PPT, while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D is slightly more tame at 162W PPT. Naturally, there is a $100 launch price difference as well.
