Conclusion

We are very excited to finally bring you a retail custom video card built around the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU.  The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING is a $589.99 video card that offers a robust, full-featured, overclocking dream on the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU.  This card carries a high price premium, but it is the top-offering, highest product SKU offered by ASUS based on the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU.  If that price tag is too much for your blood, ASUS offers many other variants at differing price points.

Default Performance

In this review, we included a standard GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition.  Keep in mind as you read through this review that a GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition does run at a faster boost clock speed than a standard GeForce RTX 2070 video card.  Therefore, the performance wins the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING has over the Founders Edition of the GeForce RTX 2070 are even more impressive.  If you use a standard RTX 2070 they’d be even wider apart in performance.

As it is the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING at default is around 20% faster than a GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition.  One of the questions we asked at the beginning was if spending the extra money on a factory overclocked GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER was worth it over the GeForce RTX 2070.  The answer is a definite yes.  If you are making a decision between a GeForce RTX 2070, and asking if you should spend the extra money to bump up to the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER then we think the answer is yes.

With the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING it offers a very high default clock speed, bringing the RTX 2070 SUPER GPU up to very fast levels.  The performance will buy you a much better gaming experience in every game.  It will allow you to play games at the highest in-game settings at 1440p very smoothly.  It will even let you dabble in NVIDIA Ray Tracing, more so than a GeForce RTX 2070 will ever do.

Comparing to Founders Edition

Now, the part that may not seem as impressive is the performance when compared to a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition.  The Founders Edition is an excellent video card, no doubt about it, NVIDIA has done a great job in its own design.  However, the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING does offer some advantages.  The video card does run faster out-of-the-box and this translates into slightly faster gaming performance.  It does this while running much cooler and very quiet as well.

Then there is the overclocking ability, nothing beats the overclocking potential on the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING.  The Founders Edition could not overclock as high.  It took pushing the voltage to the max to even try to get it to run decently at a high clock speed and that was with a loud fan speed.  On the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING we can overclock without voltage and without turning up the fans too loud noise levels.  The GPU still remains cool and we get the highest overclock ever achieved so far at 2.1GHz GPU and 15.9GHz memory.

When overclocked then the performance leaps to over 11% faster than the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition video card.  This puts the performance of the RTX 2070 SUPER GPU to a new level.  At this performance level, we can use Ray Tracing more readily or just simply benefit from smoother and faster framerates.  Then when you compare that to a regular RTX 2070 FE the performance upgrade is even greater.

AMD Comparison

You’ll notice that we did not have an AMD video card comparison in this review.  Quite simply there is nothing that can compete.  If you take the Radeon VII, it is $699 and nearing end of life with only inventory on shelves left.  At $699 the video card is $110 out of range for this comparison.  Then if you go down one level to the new AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT that video card is $399.  At $399 that is $190 out of range for this comparison.

Quite simply AMD does not have a price competitive product to factory-overclocked custom retail add-in-board partner GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU based video cards.

Final Points

ASUS has built a robust, feature-rich, fast with overclocking potential video card with the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING.  This video card proved to us that there is still headroom for overclocking the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU further.  We achieved the highest overclock so far, and as we test more video cards, we will keep comparing them to find out which one maintains that crown.

There is no doubt this is an expensive video card; we do not deny that hence the Silver Award.  It carries a $90 price premium and is no small amount of change.  At $589.99 it is the most expensive GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER based video card tested. Otherwise, though, this is gold material, the price is the only thing that some may find a bit steep. We give kudos to ASUS engineers for another awesome video card.

This video card provides great out-of-box performance, and when overclocked offers a great amount of game performance and enjoyment.  The video card also offers enough performance to warrant going the extra mile for the RTX 2070 SUPER variant, versus the non-SUPER variety.  It provides plenty of performance for gaming today hitting that sweet spot of 1440p.
