Hardware

The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING uses a triple axial fan design.  These fans are designed to increase downward air pressure and provide much more cooling at lower rotation.  The heatsink is super large with a 2.7-slot design to maximize physical surface area for cooling.

There is also a dual-BIOS switch onboard.  By default, it is in “P Mode” for performance, which is normal operation.  In performance mode the temperature and acoustics are low and the fans always spin.  You can switch the BIOS to “Q Mode” for quiet mode.  This makes the temperatures slightly higher with a lower fan spin and even shuts the fans off under 55c.  Unless silence is paramount, we recommend just leaving the card in “P Mode.”  The fans are not loud, even in performance mode.

Unique to ASUS this video card employs ASUS Super Alloy Power II with 10+2 Phase design.  SAP II capacitors, SAP II chokes, SAP II DrMOS and SAP II POSCAP.  The complete power delivery is customized along with the PCB design.  There is also an RGB header for Aura Sync.

Goals

There are some questions that we want to answer as we review this video card.  We’ve setup our review to answer some specific questions.

  1. We are including a GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition (original RTX 2070 non-SUPER) for a specific reason in this review.  Prices on regular standard GeForce RTX 2070 video cards have fallen.  You may be trying to decide if you should save some money and just go with a GeForce RTX 2070, or if it is worth it to spend a little extra and go for the RTX 2070 SUPER.  Is spending a bit more cash worth it for a overclocked RTX 2070 SUPER versus an RTX 2070?  We are going to tackle that question and talk about that buying decision.
  2. We recently overclocked a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition and found how high we could overclock it.  The question with the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING is will spending this extra money offer more performance and overclocking over that Founders Edition?  Can we actually squeeze more out of the RTX 2070 SUPER with a custom video card compared to the Founders Edition?  We are going to tackle that question and find out if we can push this video card beyond the Founders Edition.
