In Metro Exodus, we also started out with the highest graphics setting in the game called “Extreme” in the benchmark.  We pushed this setting at 4K which even the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti struggles with.  The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti was able to give us about the same performance as Red Dead Redemption in this game, around 42FPS average.  The game was not playable at “Extreme” and 4K, it’s too much even for the mighty RTX 2080 Ti.  Again, next-gen cards will be needed for this.  Overclocking the video card improved performance by 11%.

The video card was a lot faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE and Radeon RX 5700 XT of course.  It was 29% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE.

Moving down to 1440p but still keeping the highest “Extreme” setting does the trick.  Performance now jumps up to 60FPS average and the game is very playable.  Overclocking the video card improves performance by 9%.  It offers a much better gameplay experience compared to the RTX 2080 FE.  You can get a solid 60FPS and enjoy the highest “Extreme” preset image quality.

Now, this game supports something special, it supports NVIDIA Ray Tracing using global illumination.  Therefore, we can enable it on the NVIDIA GPUs and see how it performs on the RTX 2080 Ti.

At 1440p with “Extreme” preset and turning on “Ultra” NVIDIA Ray Tracing performance does drop down to 45FPS average on the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti.  However, overclocking the video card does push us right to 50FPS average, which might be acceptable gameplay performance for the most part.  There might be some slower areas, in those areas you could drop the Ray Tracing to a lower quality to bump the framerate up.

The performance is definitely edging on playability with the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti with Ray Tracing, where it is certainly not with the GeForce RTX 2080 FE at 34FPS.

Just to see what would happen we dropped the resolution to 1080p.  Now the game is definitely playable at 1080p with “Extreme” preset and “Ultra” Ray Tracing on the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti if you want to experience Ray Tracing at 60FPS.
