Metro Exodus

In the past Metro Exodus has proven to be very graphically demanding to test, so we had to include it here. We want to utilize the game’s advanced features in gameplay, like PhysX and HairWorks and Tessellation, so all these features are turned on at the highest quality in our test today in DX12. In addition, this game supports Ray Traced Global Illumination and DLSS, so we will test them all. This game’s graphics quality goes up to “Extreme” and so we will test the game at this highest quality level to really push it. We are utilizing the built-in benchmark.

1440p

Here we have the game running at “Extreme” preset which is the highest quality possible. We also have PhysX and HairWorks on at 1440p. The GeForce RTX 3080 FE gives us the best performance we’ve ever seen in the game at 75.5 FPS. The GeForce RTX 2080 FE struggles a bit with performance at the highest settings. The GeForce RTX 3080 FE is 53% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE and 20% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.

Now we have turned on the Ray Trace option, and this really kills performance on the GeForce RTX 2080 FE and RTX 2080 FE SUPER. The GeForce RTX 3080 FE though is providing great gameplay performance near 60 FPS. It’s 67% faster than GeForce RTX 2080 FE and 23% faster than GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.

Turning on DLSS helps performance, but not as much as the last few games. Still, it brings the GeForce RTX 3080 FE up to 68 FPS which is enjoyable. This is 59% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE and 21% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.

4K

Moving up to 4K also really puts the burden on these video cards, the RTX 2080 FE and RTX 2080 SUPER cannot handle it. The RTX 2080 Ti is on the threshold of not being very playable. Only the GeForce RTX 3080 FE is very playable at 53 FPS. It is 59% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE and 22% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.

Similar to the last game, turning on Ray Tracing at 4K at the game’s highest quality is very demanding. In this case, even the GeForce RTX 3080 FE cannot cope. It’s just barely over 30 FPS, and not really that far in performance from the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE surprisingly. It seems Ray Tracing really bottlenecks at 4K in this game at the highest in-game settings. The GeForce RTX 3080 FE is 80% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE though, showing that Ray Tracing overall is still a big improvement, just not enough to make it playable at 4K without DLSS. The GeForce RTX 3080 FE is 29% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE, so percentage-wise it is a good deal faster, but at these low numbers not a lot in the whole framerate.

DLSS is what makes the GeForce RTX 3080 FE shine when Ray Tracing is enabled at 4K. It now makes the game playable near 50 FPS. This is 63% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE and 21% faster than GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.
