Conclusion

We put the new GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile 8G video card to the test today. We have been looking for the release of this video card since we saw it in person four months ago and were eagerly awaiting its release. We really felt GIGABYTE had something here with this design, and our review has proven that this video card was worth the wait. We compared this to a GIGABYTE Radeon RX 7600 GAMING OC as the two are in direct competition in 1080p gaming, as well as being close in price points.

Performance

We recently reviewed the GIGABYTE Radeon RX 7600 GAMING OC. You can take a look at that here. In that conclusion, we noticed that the raster performance, which is generally a Radeon strong point was wrestled away by the RTX 4060. In our review today we see the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile performs very well in plain raster gaming. While both video cards generated very playable results across the board, the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile had the best showing.

There was one draw, Cyberpunk 2077. This is somewhat unique as the Radeon cards have simply been runaways in this category in other testing. Upscaling delivers some blistering results as well, with both cards benefitting in a good way. All in all our GIGABYTE RTX 4060 OC Low Profile was on average 4% faster than the RX 7600 (with wider margins in some games).

When we switch to Ray Tracing the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile flexes its muscles a bit. The grain of salt though is that neither card was playable in default settings in any game, except for Returnal. With DLSS enabled the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile was more than playable in all games except for Alan Wake 2. The GIGABYTE RX 7600 GAMING OC was simply no match. It appears that there are very real performance downsides with Chernobylite Enhanced Edition and Alan Wake 2 for the Radeon card. The frame rates in those two games were beyond poor.

Overclocking

We honestly did not expect the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile 8G video card to overclock well, but we were surprised at the results. The GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile is a very easy overclocker. The card responded well and gained about 4 to 6 % extra frames in every circumstance. As we stated, there is very little to adjust here due to locks on the core voltage and power limits. The GIGABYTE Control Center was very straightforward to use for our overclocking once we figured out where to find the most up-to-date version.

The fact that you can even overclock this video card past its default, without having to increase power, with the provided cooling, is impressive. The cooling solution was very robust on this card. Not as stout as a full-sized cooler as in the RX 7600 GAMING OC, but it worked well to cool the card and the fans are essentially silent even at 100%. It didn’t run terribly hot, and should work well in small form factor builds. AT 115W TDP, the power is also in check, and this is a good thing for the typical lower-wattage power supplies used in these builds. This video card is a perfect pairing for a small case and a small PSU that won’t drain a ton of power and dump a ton of heat into the system.

Final Points

We reviewed the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile 8G in detail and came away quite impressed. Gigabyte has put together a very unique small form factor video card that performs quite well at 1080p in both plain raster and Ray Tracing, especially with DLSS upscaling enabled. Nearly all our games were playable and enjoyable. The cooling solution is very capable and essentially silent. This is a big bonus if you are building a small gaming or streaming box for your living room.

There is a small price premium to buy this Low Profile video card versus the Radeon RX 7600 and that may play a part in deciding what to purchase. Keep in mind that you get DLSS, DLSS 3 Frame Generation, and DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction all with the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 OC Low Profile as well. These features alone could sway you to go for that premium pricing, after all, Frame Generation could help you to get smoother gameplay on this level of video card in games. All in all, this is a very neat little video card, well designed and a good performer.
