Gaming Performance (Dy-St)

In our game performance testing, we are utilizing an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 FE video card. We are running each game at 1080p, Native Resolution, and we are using mostly the highest game settings. However, in Clair Obscur, we have lowered the game settings. We are using manual in-game run-throughs for each game and reporting the average FPS and 1% Lows. It is important to note the 1% Lows in many instances, especially in those where the AVG is close; the 1% Lows may not be. All games are running the latest versions. All graphs are organized from fastest to slowest, and the Ryzen 7 7700X3D is highlighted in orange.

Dying Light: The Beast

AMD Ryzen 7700X3D Dying Light The Beast 1080p

In Dying Light: The Beast, this game demands some scrutiny of what you are seeing above. Firstly, the “average” FPS is very close to the same for each CPU (and this graph is grouped by AVG FPS), BUT the 1% Lows are VERY different! You really need to look at the 1% Low performance in this game to truly gauge the importance of the AMD 3D V-Cache. When you look at 1% Low performance, you’ll find that the Ryzen 7 7700X3D outperforms the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 7700 by a large margin. It is actually the Ryzen 7 9700X that has the fastest 1% Low performance, followed by the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and then the Ryzen 7 7700X3D.

The Ryzen 7 7700X3D’s 1% Lows are 7% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X and 14% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. Now, interestingly, the Ryzen 7 9700X has good 1% Lows here; something about the newer Zen 5 architecture works to its advantage in this game. This results in the Ryzen 7 9700X having the fastest 1% Low performance, which is 4% faster than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 8% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X3D. This is not a typical result. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 3% slower than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in 1% Low performance.

Hogwarts Legacy

AMD Ryzen 7700X3D Hogwarts Legacy 1080p

In Hogwarts Legacy, the extra L3 Cache does wonders; the two “X3D” CPUs come out way on top, but the Ryzen 7 9700X does play catch-up over the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 7700. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 5% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X, 14% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700, and 16% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X. The 1% Lows are 11% faster on the Ryzen 7 7700X3D compared to the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 7 7700X/7700, which is very much needed in this game. The Ryzen 7 9700X is impressive over the previous generation here, with 11% faster AVG FPS than the 7700X. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is only 1% behind the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

Horizon Forbidden West

AMD Ryzen 7700X3D Horizon Forbidden West 1080p

In Horizon Forbidden West the two “X3D” CPUs are also on top here in performance as well. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 4% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X, 5% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700, and 5% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X. The 1% Lows are up to 3% faster. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is only 2% behind the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and 4% on 1% Lows.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

AMD Ryzen 7700X3D Kingdom Come: Deliverance II 1080p

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance II the two “X3D” CPUs are also on top, and do offer better 1% Low performance. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 8% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X, 13% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X and 18% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. The 1% Lows are 9% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X, 13% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X, and 17% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 2% behind the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and matches it on 1% Lows.

Resident Evil Requiem

AMD Ryzen 7700X3D Resident Evil Requiem 1080p

The two “X3D” CPUs also come out on top in Resident Evil Requiem. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 7% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X, 9% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X and 10% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. The 1% Lows are 6% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X, 7% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X and 8% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 3% slower than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and 1% Lows are 2% slower.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

AMD Ryzen 7700X3D S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl 1080p

In Stalker 2, the newer Zen 5 architecture of the Ryzen 9 9700X is also at play in this game and generally provides better performance as we can see. Note that we are using the newest patch of Stalker 2, which upgrades the Unreal Engine version to 5.5.4. In this case, the Ryzen 7 9700X is actually 3% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X3D, and 1% Lows are 7% faster. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 2% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X, and 1% Lows regress slightly. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 6% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700, with the same 1% Low performance. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is 4% behind the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and 1% Lows are 5% behind.

SUMMARY

The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D is a great value CPU for gaming purposes. It provides a solid experience, with improved average framerate and 1% Low performance providing smooth frametime consistency in gaming. It improves upon the Ryzen 7 7700X, and is only slightly slower than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, saving you a little money. It can even compete with the newer Ryzen 7 9700X, in games. However, for productivity, it can't quite cut it compared to its more expensive brothers in the 8-core/16-thread AM5 CPU realm.
