The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D is a brand-new AM5 CPU, based on the AMD Zen 4 architecture, in 2026. This new CPU was announced at Computex 2026 and then released to retail in mid-July 2026. This CPU is widely available and not limited. The new AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D is an 8-core/16-thread CPU and utilizes AMD’s 3D V-Cache with a large 96MB L3 Cache on board for better gaming performance. This CPU sits just below the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, having a lower Base Clock and Turbo Clock, but the same 120W TDP. AMDÂ has set the MSRP at $329.
In our testing today, we primarily focused on a gameplay performance comparison with the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D. We compared it against the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, Ryzen 7 7700, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and even the Ryzen 7 9700X (Zen 5) CPU. Starting with gaming, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D did a fantastic job in performance, providing an upgraded gaming experience over the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 7700, despite the lower clock speeds. We experienced an overall average of 8% better performance with the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D over the Ryzen 7 7700X in both average FPS and 1% Low improvements in games. We found the Ryzen 7 7700X3D to be a close competitor to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, only a few percentage points behind it most of the time, as it should. The only difference between the two CPUs is the clock speed.
The comparison with the Ryzen 7 9700X was most interesting. Overall, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D actually performed better (in games) than the newer architecture Ryzen 7 9700X, most of the time. Out of 12 games, the Ryzen 7 7700X3D was faster in 8 of them. Out of those 8 games, the Ryzen 7 7700X3D was on average 6% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X for gaming, with improved 1% Lows as well. Though, interestingly, there were some games that preferred the newer architecture of the Zen 5 Ryzen 9 9700X CPU. In 4 games, either the Ryzen 7 9700X matched the Ryzen 7 7700X3D or was faster, so that is interesting to see in some games.
Looking at the performance outside of gaming, it is clear that the first-generation AMD 3D V-Cache is a detriment to the Ryzen 7 7700X3D. The lower clock speeds just overall hurt multi-core and single-core performance outside of gaming. Even the Ryzen 7 7700 was able to provide better performance in multi-core and single-core workloads. The CPU that really stole the show in those workloads was the newer architecture Ryzen 7 9700X. The Ryzen 7 9700X is clearly the better CPU if you need the fastest multi-core rendering workloads for video transcoding, rendering, or content creation work. The newer Zen 5 architecture makes a difference for work outside of gaming.

With the rising cost of DIY PC hardware components in 2026, it is important to factor in value and achieve the best gaming performance you can at an affordable cost. This is where the new AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D shines. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D provides you with the ability to maintain an 8-core/16-thread CPU at the lowest cost possible on the AM5 platform, which shines in gaming performance. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D provides a better gameplay experience than the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 7700. It even provides a better experience in most games, in comparison to the Ryzen 7 9700X, at least for gaming. The benefit is not only in the average framerate, but rather in the all-important 1% Low performance and overall frametime consistency. These benefits far outweigh any average FPS difference.
With the Ryzen 7 7700X3D, you also do not have to compromise on cores. With 8-core/16-thread you can use your computer for more than just gaming, crunching away at video transcoding, rendering, or any multi-tasking type workloads. That said, the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X (Zen 5) CPU is definitely faster at these tasks, in both multi-core and single-core workloads, for desktop use. So if you ONLY need your CPU to work as fast as possible outside of gaming, then the Ryzen 7 9700X is the better CPU, by a wide margin. However, if you have mixed usage and lean more toward wanting a CPU for gaming purposes, then the Ryzen 7 7700X3D is a great VALUE.
